Clutch question - is mine worn out?

Hey all,

I have a sneaky feeling from reading througth the forums that I have totally worn out the clutch on the bike but wanted to get some more opinions before I take it to my mechanic. When I go to one here in Cambodia I will be charged extra for being a foreigner and not knowing exactly what is wrong (plus a bunch of other stuff 'fixed' without me asking).

If I try to start the bike when in gear and clutch pulled in, there is a horrible mechanical clunking noise that becomes worse if I twist the accelerator. Starting in neutral seems fine.

When the engine is running but the bike is stationary it seems not to let me change gears to find neutral. Now when I am changing gears while driving it is almost as if I am forcing the gear change. Also if I have been driving and stop at traffic lights, when I have the clutch lever fully pulled in, the bike still wants to move.

Any advice is very much welcomed.

Cheers,

Gareth

As mentioned check the adjustment to see if it's adjusted right. Too tight and the clutch will slip. Also check that the cable is'nt seized and is returning as normal. You can check to see if the actuator lever is returning properly by grabbing it with vice grips and a rag over teeth of vice grips and turning the lever towards the rear of the bike. If it goes back further when pushed towards the rear it may be your problem. Check it has free play from cable to actuator lever. If it does not work and is still slipping after you check this it sounds like a new clutch assembly will be nessesary. I think a new clutch assembly may be necessary as the noise you discribed sounds like broken clutch basket or springs. You may be lucky though????

By the way the sprag clutch is for the electric starter motor not the clutch itself so you know.smile

Just be carefull when ordering the clutch plates as they are different between the white and blue models. Easiest way to know is to count the clutch plates and then order the part number with the correct number of plates.

If you need a full workshop manual pdf pm me your email address and i would be happy to send it to you.

First thing to check is that the clutch actuator is properly adjusted as per the manual - copy of relevant bit attached:

Thanks so much for the advice and knowledge (always a school day :) ). Fingers crossed it doesn't need replaced as god knows how I'll get the parts in Phnom Penh..
