I have a 1993 model (i'm told) TTR250 Has a serial number instead of vin??? wierd can i still rego it???

Oh, Forgot to mention it's the purple frame model with white plastics and deffinately a ttr250 open enduro . Cannot understand why it does not have a 17 digit vin, only (4gy-######) stampt on the frame stem where it's supposed to have a vin.... like my mates one.... What kind of wierd model do i have??? i want to know if i am alone OR of this model is infact some model that never had a vin from factory for some reason???? Please help guys!!!!! Thanx heaps!!!

Hi George and welcome to the forum!

Don't panic - your OE frame numbering is absolutely as Mr Yamaha originally built the bike.

The frame VIN plates only appeared on the later plastic tanked models. On the metal tanked models there is only a number stamped on the head stock. It is a shorter number as shown here

Post-2000 the longer frame numbers were introduced.

It is possible to buy and stamp VIN plates yourself and I am doing this for my project TTR as the number on the headstock is so indistinct.

Now i feel somewhat relieved by hearing this because i was unsure why i did not have a vin, because when i contacted a blue slip rego check mrchanic, he told me every vehicle manufactered post 89 had to have a vin from the manufacterer by law, and infact on a yamaha website that i can dig up if you'd like to see, it say's that every yamaha bike made after 82 has a 17 digit vin confuse

See what i mean!!! Thats why i am spinning out .... I cant undertand why i dont have a 17 digit vin, if it is supposed to being a 93 model....

Do you get my point???

How come yamaha didnt put one on if it says on a yamaha website that every bike created after 82 has a vin....?

And regarding buying a vin plate etc... where can i do this? or maybee when i go to get a blue slip saferty check , they might assist me in obtaining a vin for it in order to register it... Just wondering has anybody with the same model as me encountered problems getting rego???

One morre question, why does my bike not even have a tag on the frame atleast saying the year and month of manufacture??? is it supposed to because i cannot see where it could have been, bike is still in factory paint coat and has no tampered with holes or marks anywhere... just a simple 4gy-(and 6 numbers) on the frame head area.... and NOTHING else anywhere , no gtag , no vin.... Totally wierd ay??? SO MY QUESTION TO ALL THE TTR ENTHUSIASTS OUT THERE IS, HAS ANY ONE ELSE SEEN OR OWN A MODELTHAT DOES NOT HAVE A COMPLIANCE TAG AND NO VIN, Just a code like mine??? Also, do you think it is possible to rego this model if indeed it is factory yamaha issued like TTRfan has advised....

George, it appears (from reading the link given by Brian) that the number stamped on the frame head lug just in front of the steering lock is the VIN number.

On my TTR this number is the same as the number stamped on the aluminium plate on the front down tube (right hand face), which also has a decibel and RPM stamping below.

The numbers on the headstock and the aluminium plate are both 17 characters long. They are also contained in the UK registration document (V5) which gives us our registration number. It is issued in UK by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). Every vehicle registered in the UK and licensed for use on the Queen's Highways must have a V5 and number plate. (Except the Sovereigns vehicles) wink

As long as you can read the letters and numbers on the headstock then you have no worries - famous last words. biggrin biggrin

I have refurbished or broken for spares many purple-framed TTRs. None have had frame plates or long VIN numbers.

I have checked the registration documents for those I still have and the 4GY(4WA, 4MR or whatever the model is)-****** format is what is shown against the VIN/Chassis/Frame number.

If you aren't convinced then a quick phone call to your national Yamaha Customer Services line will confirm - that is if they are as helpful as the UK team.

Thanx heaps Brian, I will continue my build now knowing that Yamaha must have made it like this... i hope i will be allowed to register it... But i am predicting hassles allready... i can just feel it coming.... because there is no compliance plate on the bike.... its strange but, i will go all the way... I will make Yamaha provide me with one if i am not allowed to register it etc... will see what happens and keep you guys posted.... many thanx to all that responded to my questions!!!! Cheers,George.
