The sun is shining and the lanes are calling................
Since the declaration of a drought in the West Country it seems to have been persistenyly raining!
Today's sunny respite gave an excuse to explore the drought damaged lanes near where I live.
One of the most used of Devon's lanes is showing signs of possible subsidence into the adjacent brook. I had to turn round here, though not because of the subsidence.
I had to clean the TTR so I went through the local ford and up a hill to catch this view.
Eventually I got to Otterton. I elected not to go to the stupendous view at the top of the hill above and decided to investigate how the drought is affecting Otterton Brook, which has an unmetalled road along part of it.
It wasn't quite axle deep but it's the deepest I've ever seen it; and I'd forgotten my snorkle!
Before I could leave the brook I was forced to park up and shift a few branches and boughs that blocked the exit ramp.
If this drought lasts much longer we will have to think about equipping TTRs with water wings and paddles.
I heard on the news yesterday that Australia as a whole was out of drought for the first time since the 70s?
To follow up on Martyn's post, I popped up to the petrol station on the 325 this afternoon to fill up ahead of a possible trail ride tomorrow but somehow got distracted and ended up going for a bimble instead.
I didn't have my riding gear on but was drawn irresistibly to an easy lane near home, Postlake Lane. I was surprised to find a small stream running down it and ended up with soaking wet jeans but it was great fun. I took the long way home to dry off a bit - just had to be done
This "riding in a drought" looks to be good fun - looking forward to the ride tomorrow - or Friday...
Only thought I was going for petrol so didn't take the camera so no pics - sorry! I will put that right tomorrow if we still go out. Friday looks to be a better day for a bimble....
Great ride' i'm jealous. I haven't ridden the trusty TTR for a few weeks and it's killing me. Would love to give the lanes a go in country uk. When I was racing mountain bikes a few years back the UK MTV mags raved about the lanes and their dubious access from time to time. In south oz we had one good year of rain in 2010 but it pretty much hasn't rained since. During bad years I can usually rely on my rainwater tanks most of the time. I haven't had enough water to use for about 6 months now.
