Speedo Died on the W/end

On the way home the speedo started playing up, became erratic then stopped all together, stripped it down today, checked the speedo unit first with a cordless drill, worked perfectly, so cleaned the cable housing the cable and regreased the lot, next removed the wheel and removed the drive unit, pulled off the circlip and dismantled the whole thing, washed and cleaned all the bits, and I found that the steel ring that contacts the lugs on the hub had became cupped, so I hammered it flat again, If you look in the service manual Chapter 6-2 you'll see the speedo gear unit with the 3 arrows pointing to the 3 lugs, that's the thing I hammered flat,

So then applied a liberal amount of MDS grease ( MDS grease is used in CV Joints so should be OK ) and put the whole lot back together again and now works just fine, took a couple of hours, also added a couple of extra rubber grommets to the speedo unit mounting bracket as the rubber bits had compressed a bit, so nice and tight again

Hope this helps anyone that has the same problem

Cheers

Steve

That means that whoever last had the wheel out didn`t line the tabs up.

Ah yes the joys of buying a second hand bike  no

Funny they didn't mention the stripped and rounded sump plug either, ended up having to weld a small strip of 25 x 3mm flat steel on to get that one off  biggrin

Tell me about it! My 2003 bike turned up last week, advertised as `well loved` and perfect mechanical condition` I started giving it a going over at the weekend.

Speedo doesn`t work because there are no innards at all in the drive. Rear number plate holder wouldn`t last 5mins on a trail. Handlebars badly bent. Hestitant  running at low revs.

I would be within my rights to demand my money back, even in a private sale as it was inaccurately described, but it is not worth the hassle and I got it at a reasonable cost. Just bloody annoying!!!!!!!!!

Mark, they probably "Loved" riding it but "Hated" doing maintenance, you'll have it up to scratch soon, anyone that hangs around here would

I took the bars off last night to fit my risers and Dakar highs. This is how bent they were and the bloke reckoned he knew the brace bar was bent but hadn`t noticed that the left side of the main bar was. Either he is deformed or a liar!
