the townmate is 1992 with 13,200 miles on it and thought the chain would last longer, the only noise is from timing chain.

is it a easy job, it would mean removing flywheel and stator plate and also removing the head.

I would suggest taking it apart and inspecting it to make sure it is assembled correctly.

My little townmate or T80 has alittle bit of an on going problem the poor old girl,

The timing chain has been ratteling and so i changed the spring tensioner as it was old and it is abit quiter but still ratteling and when i was adjusting it was going from very tight then moved it abit more and it went quite slack.

I do tend to have to rev it abit to keep up with traffic and put good semi oil from Comma and change it every couple of months when money is available.

hope its not a new timing chain.

How old is your T80? Is it one of many ailments? Does it have a bottom end rattle as well as top end?

The fact that the tension fluctuates in a cycle indicates either a foobared timing chain or the more serious problem of worn crank or cam bearings.

When the bearings get worn it allows the shafts running in them to lift up or down, rather than only spinning, thereby altering the shaft centres. Replacing the bearings can be expensive. bleh

A worn chain becomes noticeable by being tight at one spot and loose at another. The chain will be cheaper and easier to replace than a set of bearings (cam or crank).

Also, to do either a bearing or chain renewal means taking the head off at least. So it is also convenient to replace the chain at the same time as renewing the bearings, but bearings can be left if it's the chain at fault. wink

Sorry if it sounds complicated but who said it was going to be easy? disbelief

Sorry, Sammy, I've no idea how easy a cam chain replacement is on a T80. confuse

I've never had my TTR stripped that far, either. no (Yet!)

Surely, it can't be too difficult and won't be beyond a competent rider/mechanic's ability.

Your best bet would be to let your mates have a listen & look at it and ask for their advice and recommendations.

Is there a T80 dedicated web site around for information?

Who'se to say if your bike will be okay to drive. confuse

Look at it this way, a frayed shoe lace works as a shoe lace until it finally snaps and becomes two pieces of string.

Similarly a rattly T80 is still a rattly T80 until the rattles stop and it becomes a push-bike. cry

Sorry, I can't say. disbeliefno
