So, I'm now about 3 weeks into the world of motorcycling. Getting a good feel for the limits of the bike, and working on my stance, slow-speed maneuvers, etc. I've decided this weekend to leave the safe confines of my backyard and empty next-door lot for a little bit of offroading. As luck would have it, there's about a 3 mile long trail for an undergound petroleum pipeline 1/4 mile from my house. Attached are pics of the bike in its current livery, and the view from the head of the trail. (I started to hit the trail last weekend, but was unaware of the water hazard until I got there - it was 34 degrees (F), and I didn't want to be a novice rider *and* miserable) smile

Good luck, Nate. Don't forget to pack your flippers & snorkel, it looks a tad damp there! biggrin

I would advise looking for another rider to sally forth with. Two's company and a friend in need is a friend indeed. wink

Thanks Martyn! I would definitely like to find a buddy to ride along with. Found out last week that a guy I work with a) lives 5 houses down from me, and b) is a seasoned MXer. I'm going to see if he can make this little jaunt with me. If not, I'll just putter along and keep it safe, making it purely an exploratory endeavor.

So, a quick update - Got to the trail this morning, and fjorded my first 2' crossing (we had severe thunderstorms and tornadoes in my area last night). The trail went for about 1/2 mile before I hit a "Private Property" area (I guess more private than the petroleum company's trail...). At any rate, got some riding in, got to practice on some squirrelly mud, and over tree roots a bit. Baby steps. Very glad to find somewhere to practice that only requires me to violate Alabama Motor Vehicle law for 1000' to get there. Good stuff.
