Air filter/housing
Permalink

Hello

I removed my seat today and found a whole lot of mess,

the bottom of the air filter housing was just thick sludge and the tube that drains all the excess water was block solid no

I have included a photo of the top of the housing which doesn't look right (like something has been removed)

I think its like the snorkel mod, but has just been completely removed hmm

Just wondering what you think i should do regarding this,

-buy a new one?

-Or any thing else i can do?

How do i go about cleaning the air filter?

Thanks in advance for help

Dan

That is more than a snorkel mod. A fairly big chunk has been cut out of the top of your airbox cry

This is what the standard set up with an unmodified snorkel looks like:

The reason for the emulsified oil sitting in the bottom of your airbox could be caused by the drain (arrowed red in pic below) not being emptied regularly? Have you taken it off to check recently?

The air filter should be washed in air filter cleaner (Silkolene or similar - follow the instructions on the tin) and, when clean and dry, re-oiled with proper air filter oil. That is my opinion anyways wink

hi there mate. the sludge has been identified by TTR fan as good as it will be by anyone.

in relation to the snorkel being removed, i did the exact same mod on mine, as when i did the "cut back" of the snorkel like some have suggested, mine ran like a pig, even after getting it tuned the other day. I guess it all depends on your jetting, what altitude you ride at, and how deep in water you go.

I dont go deep in water, so the risk of anything getting in that big hole is less than those that do. I would also suggest checking your airbox side cover, because one other mod is to put holes in that, your previous owner may have done so. I did not, as i thought making the top bigger would be safer than putting holes all over the place for water to get in.

check your jetting too. mine was real rich from factory, even after adding exhaust and new air filter. another reason i could afford to cut the hole bigger after ripping out the snorkel.

mine is running as good as a TTR will now, hopefully if you dont go through deep water, yours will be too. enjoy!

Thanks for replies, i would rather have it all standard to save water from buggering up my engine or anything else,

Would i need to buy a whole new filter housing or can i just get the snorkel and fit it in using instant gasket? ( to water proof it wink)
Thanks dave i have checked the side panel and all looks good smile

Just need a new exhaust for mine now was thinking the short header pipe and motad rear pipe, i bought a FMF powercore 4 for it but it is very loud and wasn't jetted correctly no so trying to flog this, to fund new pipe.

Thanks

Dan

if you get a snorkel from somewhere you will be able to seal around it with perspex or plastic and sealant, or you could just buy a new box and snorkel altogether and have it look shmick.

perhaps there is someone on this forum that has the snorkel laying around if they ripped it out. not me though sorry.

Yeah thats a good idea i have found the complete housing on ebay for 27 pound posted, just waiting for more pictures from the seller to make sure it has the snorkel attached to it.
Thanks

On my standard TTR (no mods) there seems to be a gap between the seat base and the rear mud guard. I presume this is to allow cool air to be drawn from an area away from the engine and direct intake noise downwards. It also allows all the muck to be blasted up under the seat and over the airbox intake from the rear tyre. Not sure about this yet but I've not seen this amount of dirt in this area on my other bikes. I might experiment with some gaffer tape biggrin

there should be some foam in the gap you are talking about snail. to stop the gunk getting up and over.

With the picture above by TTRfan, the drain (with the red arrow) has been emptied last week and again this week both times a lot of water has come out.
Just wondering if this is normal or not alot of water should come out or not?
Thanks

there are 2 drains.
I'm assuming you are talking about the drain from a small canister which feeds into the airbox, not the actual airbox drain.

this canister collects crankcase gases (via a breather pipe from the top of the cam box) before allowing them back into the airbox.
it is normal to have a little fluid in it after a few rides, even on a new bike with a standard airbox.

the fluid is a mixture of water oil and petrol (not just water - which would be strange, does it smell a bit like petrol?).
if you have worn piston/rings, dirty oil and stop-start/cold running there will probably be more fluid.

if there is always way too much fluid in the canister drain but no fluid in the airbox drain (the clear stubby horizontal tube nearby) then you would have to be getting suspicious that you might have a worn motor, allowing too much blow by into the crankcase.

Thanks for reply smile

Yeah it deffinetly smells of pertol, i could have dirty oil, don't think it has been changed in a couple of months i will do that asap and see how it goes.

I don't really no how much fluid to expect to come out, there isn't a great deal to be fair.

Thanks

Dan
