Hi guys,

Hope you had a good Christmas.

I have been commuting through the snow over a moorland track on my TTR250 ('94 Raid), having a few slips trips and falls on the ice but never being let down by the bike yet.

I recently changed my Sprag with parts I sourced from Partshark in America, I did it because I thought it was banging on switch off, but now I'm not so sure as it is still making the same noise. The good news is that the starter pinion and idler gears were all fine. The peace of mind has made it worth while really, as before I did it I was convinced it was going to blow up.

I replaced the gasket on that side whilst I did it, I have noticed that there seems so be a tiny amount of seepage on the other side, just a darkening of the mud round the seal when it dries, how easy is that side to do? Is there anything I should be looking at doing whilst I'm in there?

I need a new headlight as the current 1 tealight power bulb (thats on full beam) is pathetic. I have seen the Polisport headlight that is on the TTR shop but its only 30-35W, I was looking for a 55-60W. Any ideas?

Also I wondered whether there was anywhere to get cheap batteries? £50 seems a lot.

I'm going to try and bend some wire round from the exhaust heat shield, as behind the heat shield in front if the frame there is a gap that has burnt through my trousers. Any professional remedies out there (for the heat shield, the trousers are history).

Pete, there was a post in the local (Devon) TRF forum in October last year regarding a source of batteries.

Just bought another TTR battery (Numax YT7B-4) from Positive Batteries opposite Darts Farm - good price at £25. Worth ringing Martin on  01392 874495 for a quote. He posts at cost as well wink

You could give them a try because they do post.

Thanks guys I'll give them a ring. Meanwhile my battery is inside keeping warm. Last time I lef tit outside for any length of time during a cold snap I had to bump start it, which was far too energetic for me! Any ideas re: the headlight and other side cover?

I had the same problem with my trousers blankstare, i thought of the perfect solution and gave it a go very cheap actually.

Bought heat wrap of ebay

and used a couple of juberly clips to secure it in place, very easy to fit and actually works

If you look at the back of your guard you will see two wire "ends" welded to the plate. Most guards lose the wire loop at some stage and I am guessing that has happened to yours. This wire loop is what should be keeping your trousers off the hot pipe. See below:

The Raid has got the best headlight of all the TTRs confuse

Or is yours not fitted with the original big glass round unit?

Regarding the wrapping of the exhaust where my trouser touches it; Thanks! Perfect solution, I shall get some ASAP. Just goes to show the value of these forums...

 I have got a plain white square unit that puts out about 3 tealight power. I guess the original one has got swapped along the way? Apologies for the horrendous picture quality but it gives an idea.

A previous owner has fitted a headlight unit from the Open Enduro model which runs the smaller bulb.

I think that unit has a plastic lens so even if you managed to find a bigger bulb you might end up melting it.

You could:

  1. try and find an original Raid headlight unit (best solution coz they are really good!)
  2. replace the current headlight (a saleable item!) with a glass unit from a later TTR or WR250F which can run bigger bulbs
  3. fit spotlights - I am considering this as I have enjoyed the night trail rides I have done but would feel safer with better lights
  4. find a universal fitting after-market headlight that can run a bigger bulb

Thanks chaps,

Brian, would you consider part-exing my headlight for a raid one (I'd be amazed if you didn't have one). If you don't where would you suggest? I can't see one on ebay or google readily but haven't had a thorough look through yet.

If not, is the Polisport headlight significantly better than the Open Enduro unit?
