I refurbished a carb this morning and was surprised at just how much debris sat on top of the filter. It's a wonder the TTR ran confuse

WTF!!! I was cleaning my second carb today and i found out that the throttle valve was stuck!!! when i finally made it out i could see something like rust on the walls inside!!!If it isnt rust it should clean with petrol right???But if it is rust what i do??i throw it away?

Get some bricks and some cement, Brian. Mix the cement with the carb dust together with sand in a 1:2:3 mix.

You can then complete all the outstanding home improvements. smile

 

Fwtian, I think the crud you find in the carburettor is sediment from the petrol and dust and muck that's not been filtered out.

It accumulates over time and if nothing is done the efficiency of the carburettor diminishes to eventualy strangle the motor. doh

Scrape it out (regularly if yours is affected) and consider filtering the petrol supply to the carb to lessen the effect.

Martyn thanks for the info. I will clean it tommorow. If i get it fully cleaned and it looks like new then the carb must be ok right?! because i want to sell it...

If you have the equivalent of our Halfords then try getting something like this to help you:-

If you've got it in bits already try soaking them in a tub of parafin overnight and them maybe a scrub a toothbrush or a paint brush. I'd be careful what you scrape and very careful what you scrape with. It's unlikely to be rust as there's very little ferrous metal in the carb. Does it have a metal fuel tank? Much more likely to be dried petrol gum. That can have the look of rust. Parafin will shift it after a soak and check it's not in the jets as well.

every 3rd or 4th or when i think of it ,tank of fuel i dose with carb/injector cleaner
on both the TTR & XT...

I am stripping down a carb for an "extreme" cleaning and restoration job and just removed the float valve seat and filter.

Interesting what "stuff" accumulates on the top of this little filter over the years! 

Beats me how it gets through the filters on the petrol tap confuse
