Hi , am new to the world of green lane bikes , so am after some advise to what is the best way to look after the chain?? also which grade oil I should use in my TTR O/Enduro ?? also is there anything I should be oiling/greesing on a regular basis ie weekly ???
Richie, have you got a hand book for your bike? All maintenace details are given and also what oils, greases and things are specified.
Service manuals can be found by Googling, but in the meantime:-
try looking here for engine oil details:- Clicky thing
Chains should not be tight. Measure the up & down movement between front and rear sprockets and it should move between 35 and 50 mm to be right.
I oil my chain (after cleaning it) with a toothbrush and used engine oil. You can also use a squirt can of chain lube if you can afford them.
With regular cleaning and inspections a rider will become aware of necessary maintenance tasks as a matter of course, BUT - read the manual for details.
You used to be able to get the manual from a link on Brian's http://www.ttr250.com/ but it says there isn't one out there any more. Boo. What happened there Brian? Could it be hosted here? I know nothing about all that sort of thing but I do have the pdf. On my phone. Often handy, if I have my glasses. 30Mb so I guess that's too big to e-mail you. I could burn it to disc at a push.
Garden variety 10w40 will be fine but use a bike one. And change it frequently. There is only a litre in there so it takes a battering. Car oil has too much other muck in it for bikes. I'd probably pay a few quid more for a tub of something I'd heard of but it doesn't need super-duper golden pit lane stuff. And that stuff will still need changing frequently.
New fork oil feels nice, and it would be worth dropping the rear suspension for a grease up if you don't know it's been done recently.
Maybe unplug all the connectors and put some Servisol grease in there to keep the water out and the corrosion to a minimum.
