I have a 1995 250 raid and have an oil leak. I think it's comming from the front sprocket area..any Ideas and is it an easy repair for a novice. thanx Guys. Daz

Hi Daz

Two possibilties spring to mind and I hope it is the first of them as it is the easier/cheaper to fix! Both are relatively straightforward repairs requiring no special tools.

a) The oil seal (part 25 here http://www.motosport.com/dirtbike/oem-parts/YAMAHA/2005/TTR250/TRANSMISSION ) behind the sprocket has failed. I bought a TTR recently with an oil leak from this area and it turned out to be the previous owner had forced a new seal in without removing the old one so it wasn't seated correctly. I have removed the remains of the old seal and refitted the new one and hope that's fixed the leak.

b) More worrying would be a cracked generator casing if you have had sprag clutch problems. This is a real pain and, if it has happened, the cheapest repair is to get the casing welded although some owners who have had that done say it cracked again. Good s/h casings are expensive and in short supply. 

I suggest you bite the bullet and get the sprocket off and see if the oil leak source is obvious. Mine was as the leaking oil had cleaned the area directly below the oil seal..

Thanx Brian for you advise. I recently bought a carb of you, and it's solved the fuel probs . If your the Brian from tottally ttr that is.  I live in Thailand. I will get the local bike shop to look at it and hopefully it will be the oil seal and not the case cracked. I'm gonna be ordering a lowering kit and a chain slider from you as soon as i got this problem solved. Thanx again.

Just re-painted all the plastics and put a new exhaust front to back in stainless for the equivelent of 100 quid. repairs out here in Thailand are so cheap. It's nice and quite too.

How did you paint the plastics Darren? I would like to have a go but am not sure how to prepare the panels for spraying.

Hi Brian.

I started by cleaning the plastics with warm water and a little fairy liquid. Hands that do dishes and all that. hahaha. I used a pan scrubber to help remove all the dirt. Then I used a 240 grade wet and dry but used it wet only, the rubbed them down until I'd removed all the scratches and reduced the paper grade accoringly down to an 800 then primed them with a plastic primer ( all paints are from a can ) I didnt go less than 800 untill I had applied the first coat of primer, then platted it down again, with a 1000 grade before adding several coats of acrylic white laquer. rubbing down between coats. I did find the acrylic paint a liitle soft on marks. but the pannels look well if if I say so myself. Not sure if the front mud gaurd will stand up to the riggors of beeing bent and twisted when i hit the dirt but time will tell. Hope this was of use. It is all in the preparation.

Will load some pics of the exhaust tomorrow for your perusal.

Hi Darren
Just been reading your post and is it the exhaust that you have on the bike, if so mate what a bargin lol, just paid £80 for a second hand one.
i have the same oil leak as you, can you tell me Brian is all parts for a 1995 raid the same as the 2005 parts ficsh that the link goes to ???
i see that the decompression body is no longer in use, can i take mine out and get a blacking plug for it.
Hope you dont think im taking over this thread just seems tis the same problems as you Darren and might be useful to know for you as we have the same bike

Yeah the exhaust is the one on the bike. RE: the oil leak I took the  digital sender case off today and cleaned the whole area with a degreaser and put it back together i will give it a run to work tomorrow and Tuesday, then open her up again for a closer look to see if i can see where the oil is comming from. here are some photo's of the exhaust for you perusal.

Hi Lin.
I bought the exhaust from the backstreet bike shop next to me. They charged me round about 5,000 Thai baht, which is roughly 100 quid. there was a few sratches on the stainless when they had fitted it, but hey im sure there will be more on it when i get it off road during the holls. if your intrested let us know and maybe we can come up with some way of getting it to you.

TTR complete gasket sets?

The gaskets look right Daz but the true test will be for you to buy a set and let us know wink

I know that Vesrah and M.C.S. also do complete gasket sets for the TTR250 and possibly also ProX. 

If any other owner has experience of buying gasket sets please feedback!

Sorry Darren but it was a while ago that I did my research and I can't find the details.

I also think you may be able to source them more cheaply in your part of the world as I think they are made in Japan - certainly the Vesrah ones are.

Keep us up to date if you find anything.

The gasket sets should fit all TTRs from 1993 to current day models.

Wiil search and see what I can find. If anyone else has any info would be glad to hear it.

Just noticed that the o-ring behind the starter has slipped outside the position it should be in too. Urrrrrrrgh wish i was machanicaly minded. Big sausage fingers and all that.

Oil leak sorted,  it was the gasket on the side casing and instant gasket was the cure for the time being, coz  there is no gasket for this in Thailand, so thats is  the cure for the moment, and replaced the o-ring on the started motor too. Now on to oil leak number 2. the head gasket, have to order that too.   urrghgh... fun and games, but she will  breath a full gasp of healthy air soon.biggrin
