I am curently restoring the pretty metallic blue tanked version of the 4RR2 model Open Enduro and had a problem tracing a headlight fault.
I was surprised to find a relay under the tank which I hadn't come across before. Looking at the parts manual, this relay was only fitted to the 4RR2 and 4WA1 (Raid) models. Part number 4WA-81950-00
The relay has stopped working and doesn't seem repairable as it seems to be cased in resin.
I am therefore in need of the square(ish) black headlight relay which sits under the tank in a rubber mounting - the writing on mine says 4WA-00 Omron.
Has anyone got one or know of one for sale please?
I had loads of grief with the relays on my Cagiva. Loads of air sucked in and talk of hen's teeth and bespoke parts.
Was complete rubbish and actually very few automotive manufacturers ever make their own relays and usually use standard fitments for cost reasons. It's just a matter of finding out what kind of throw pattern it has and some have some circuitry inside (a capacitor or diode,) to mitigate 'blowback' from the coil.
I think the originals on my bike were Omron. Durites are in there now. makes no odds.
Thanks for the info Andy. I had started to think along your lines and had started looking at alternatives. The TTR one looks something like the relay below with four male car-size spade terminals. Before I do any more though I will just get a price for the genuine Yamaha part.
Bit of a delay getting through to Fowlers as their computer system had gone down.
The bad news is that the part is no longer available so, for the time being, I have Scotch clipped the incoming brown live wire to the outgoing brown/white wire which feeds the headlight switch. All appears to function properly so it might be a permanent fix!
I can't think why these two models had relays when all the other models did not so am hoping it is unnecessary
Just taken the TTR for a run and when I parked it up, the engine carried on running when I switched off the ignition although the headlight went out
The engine stopped when I hit the kill switch on the bars but obviously I have got something wrong. Thing is I haven't got a wiring diagram for the bike to check it out so I guess I had better source a relay asap to replace my bodge
I looked on eBay and the closest I could find to mine is a headlight relay for a Honda CBR 600 so have bought one and fingers crossed it will do the trick! These are pics of my duff one:
I tried the CBR relay I got from eBay and it didn't fix the problem.
Whilst swapping tanks between my Raid and OE, I noticed that the Raid had a relay same as the OE so I fitted it and it didn't make any difference so my thoughts are that it isn't the relay that is the problem.
So there is a problem in the wiring somewhere. Very difficult to trace the wires from the relay without hacking into the loom though
What does the relay do? Does it just turn on the headlight when you turn on the ignition? What about changing beam?
If the bike still runs with the ignition off when you join the relay wires then perhaps you could work back round from the battery positive with the negative lead on the earth and work out where it isn't doing what it should regarding the ignition switch. Could it be the ignition switch itself that's faulty and still supplying the low tension circuit even in the off position?
This is the first time I have owned this particualr model. Apart from the 4WA1 (Raid) model, this is the only one with this relay. I can't think why it needs it.

He suggested that maybe the relay only came into operation when the engine started to save load on the battery i.e. engine starts, sends current to relay and headlight works. That would make sense so I will get the tank off and have another play.

So, is anyone going to have a go at fitting the headlamp relay to a standard ttr then? It would be a great mod to just have the headlight coming on when started. I know fitting a switch would be easyer but you wouldn't have to think about having to switch it on or off.

I just found one of these 4WA headlight relays that I didn't know I had so am think about giving it a go if I can work out how to plumb it in

No I have not done much ttr-ing for a while, been more occupied looking for a road bike for my trip in June, with the weather picking up a bit I have got the wrx out again so I can soon start doing a few jobs on the ttr. I was out on the ttr a few weeks ago with my friend who has a 4rr2 and noticed his headlight cam on as soon as the engine started, the relay must use the live charging feed to switch the headlight on.
The archives and search function on this forum are very useful! I was going through a box of indicator relays and came across two of these 4WA-00 Omron headlight relays:
It brought back bad memories of trying to sort out what I thought was a fault
The relay is actually a very good idea which only switches the headlight on when the engine is running and saves accidentally flattening the battery when accidentally leaving the ignition switched on with the engine stopped. The WR250R has the same idea.
There is a special rubber holder that allows the relay to sit with the indicator relay and I have a couple of those as well.
Did anyone ever try fitting one of these to a "non-relay-as-standard" TTR?
