Oregon TAT and smoke

The Colorado and Montana TAT posts inspired me to re-run the Oregon TAT sections (my recommended that is). I've only found time to do the western half because of work and all, and I have to pray to the dirt gods to let me pass unseen over pavement, so my progress is slow.  If you crossed the Cascades this week after 3000 miles you'd be disappointed. We're into fire season now and for the 3rd year in a row it is really bad. I ran the sections immediately east and west of the pacific crest this weekend, which are spectacular, and here's a taste of the smoke. In this shot I'm at 5000 feet looking down at a river at 1000 feet and a peak (Diamond) at 8700. You can't see the peak at all. Not a fire for 100 miles but you'd think its just over the next ridge that's how big this year's timber fires are. At least none have been blamed on OHVs.  The screen shot from google earth is the afternoon section from Summit Lake to Oakridge.

The two main TAT sites are great but lack input from local riders.  Their Oregon sections really miss a lot of good stuff.

I'm not smart enough to post .kmz or .gpx files here. Can you post a gps file here? Or just a screen shot?

We've had a great summer in the Pac NW so far, no fires, knock on dry wood. Just about all my riding since May has been trying to work out a return TAT route through Oregon, north of Sam's existing main route so its the pacfiic loop rather than pacific spur. I've got roll chart data from Port Orford to Baker City, its been fun. The western cascades are a challenge because you never know if the road is still there until you get there. I spent a day re-working this part, the road below is gone and it ain't comin back. But the detour is almost as good.

This would be the return for Sam's route www.transamtrail.com but it would also work for Kevin's route http://www.gpskevinadventurerides.com/trans-america-trail/trans-america-trail-compairson if you wanted to return further north.

That's a good 2000 foot drop all the way to the bottom. Uphill is a cliff.

Found this cool waterfall on the detour, call it detour falls I guess its not on the map.  Water bottle refill.
