Help TTR is being real weird!

Alright so stopped by a mates house to pick something up, killed the bike grabbed what I needed, went to start again, no E start, fair enough, gave it a hellofa lott kicks, nothing, long story short I’m getting no power to the starter and no spark, dash lights work fine, horn, headlights, battery is fine, the fuse is fine, but no spark and no E start, anyone have any ideas, checked the kill switch, checked the key switch (is fine because dash lights up.) I’m lost and I’ve had a really rough weekend, this is just a kick in the guys while I’m already on the ground. Thank you all very much.

Hi Michael and welcome to the forum!

My first suggestion is to check the sidestand switch. If it's not working properly it won't let power through to the starter circuit.

A quick check is to short out the terminals on the solenoid. This will show whether its a problem with the starter or the starter circuit.

Loads of starter information on the forum if you do a search wink

Hey mate, sorry forgot to add that I’ve removed the side stand switch and clutch switch a few years ago, she’s been as reliable as the day has been long up until now.

Its Just weird that there’s no spark at all though, like only the dash lights Other lights work everything else is dead, im lost, I tested the starter motor by bridging the solenoid and it spins but why the no spark...?:/ sorry man this is really stressful haha

So many possibilities! Needs a methodical approach.

First up check that you are getting power to the starter switch. If so, check that power is reaching the solenoid when the starter button is pushed. If it is then you probably have a faulty solenoid. If not then you probably have dirty contacts in the starter switch - simple enough to take the switch apart to clean them wink

It seems odd that both the starter goes AWOL at the same time as the spark. But it's going to be easier to check the spark situation once you have the e-start working again so suggest sorting that out first.

Sorry man my heads all over the place, I pulled the kill switch apart, tried it in both posi even totally disassemble, kill switch has no power in any way, one side of the kill switch had power. just trying to remember what I tried I spent all day on the problem. Perhaps the neutral switch? But the N light was on and would turn off when I selected gear.

Bit confused by your last post as the kill switch doesn't figure in the starter circuit - it just needs to be in the "on" position confuse

It's the starter (grey) button part of the switch you need to be checking.

How are you checking for power?

Is your switch the original TTR one as per photo below?

PS These are the contact faces you may need to clean:

Didn’t clean the contacts mate but I also bridged them on the solder and still nothing.

Hey come to think of it, there was a 2 pin plug with a blue and white blue set of wires leading to it, that’s the clutch switch connection right? Does that need to be a complete circuit or should those two wires NOT join? Because it was just a bare plug heading towards the engine/cdi area... and they did not touch.

YYEEEEEESSSS fixed it!! , I had the kill switch apart BUT the black casing that held the 3 bumped plate that broke or completed the circuit was only just not making contact, I noticed this when I squeezed it AND gave it a kick, saw a spark, all fixed now, thanks so much Brian YOU were the one that made me second guess the kill switch!:)))))

As is said in the Bible - "hallelujah."

Brian was right also when saying, "Search and ye shall find."

Brilliant result, congratulations on the "dawning realisation" and re-electrification.

Now "go forth and multiply" the distance travelled.

Amen!

Martyn
