Kick Starter
Permalink

Hello my TTR 250 starts first time on the button and thats good because when using the kick starter i tend to wear myself out, yesterday after about 12 kicks to no avail i dropped to the floor with pulled leg calf muscles in agony and in tears with pain causing a disturbed nights sleep and unable to walk all day.

Please there must be a secret method of doing this, could anyone out there put me out of my misery and explain what i am doing so wrong.

Thanking you all

Malcolm Woods

Oh me gaud! I've just recently fitted mine and although it does take a few goes, which I think is down to the carb needing sorting a bit more. My technique goes something like this. Wearing big boots! Ignition on, kill switch off, a couple of full twists of the throttle. VERY Slowly turn the engine over with the kickstart til you feel a bit more resistance, ie the piston is at top dead centre. Then simultaneously kick it and open throttle, hopefully it catches! Blip throttle until warm, ta-da. Sometimes work, otherwise start process again 🙄

Google Translate ---- I've been tormenting the week just like you. And once I forgot to pull the suction and start immediately and without the grip. First, slightly overcome the high resistance, kick up and vigorously down. It works well for me.

Mine wouldn't start on the kicker ever, even when warm, whilst the lecky one generally starts it with the gentlest touch of the button.  I resolved this problem about 6 years ago by taking the kicker off.  This makes it a little easier to pick up and it goes a tiny bit better without all that weight!  I have a 16W Chinese LED running light in place of the fixed on low beam 35W bulb that is massively visible, even coming out of a setting sun, but uses less than half the power, thus the battery retains tons of charge and can be abused for ages while fixing electrical problems.  Even when it's flat due to owner stupidity a quick run and a bump gets it going.  In start circuit emergencies a piece of thick wire about 200mm long kept under the seat can be taken out to short the battery direct onto the starter solenoid terminal!  I also have a neutral simulator button on the left bar that allows it to be started in gear, this is really useful when you are stuck in a load of rocks or stood on your left foot and can't select neutral.  Clutch in with fingers, button with thumb, hit starter with other hand, let clutch out and away!  The button just earths the wire to the neutral switch, thus fooling the ECU into thinking the bike is in neutral and allowing starting.

Sounds like your clutch inhibitor circuit is down - should start in gear if the clutch is pulled in, or is this wiring what you're using, just with a normal switch in place of the clutch perch one?

With regards to starting on the kicker, I could never do it from cold on my 325 'till I started riding an XR400 a bit and learnt to find the compression stroke position properly!
