Starter motor issue
Permalink

Currently riding my ttr through Turkey and the starter motor seems to have developed a fault. It seems sluggish turning the engine over 2 or 3 times makes a clunk then stops. The bike started fine thus morning and this fault has only started today. The last time I tried a small amount of smoke appeared from near the front of the engine but can't be to sure where from. I've put another battery on but to no avail the bike bump starts and runs fine but just won't start off the button. Am going to try robbing the starter motor off Dan's bike tomorrow night to see if that cures the issue.

The bike doesn't bang when turned off so am hesitant to believe it's the sprag clutch.

Has anyone on here had a similar fault or issue with there bike at all?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Jordan

Only ever seen a knackered battery do the same, or a faulty battery lead, as you said it is not the battery I would try and check all the leads and cables.

Not something to do with the brushes inside the starter motor is it?

When my brushes were worn the starter sometimes clicked and sometime spun without engaging. Rocking the bike in gear helped for a while but new brushes fixed permantly

Am going to spend a day on the bike tomorrow looking at the wiring and trying a different starter motor and see if I can see what's going on. Bump starting it everywhere at the moment is a pain in the arse.

Likely you need a new sprag, generator cover and bearing at the very least! Can only have been a worn or faulty sprag that caused that much damage.

Also, check the boss on Gear 3 isn't worn and damaged.

Are the starter pinion and gears OK?

I feel your pain cry
