Clutch switch cable

I was adjusting the angle of the handlebars and levers when out popped the clutch switch. I can see that the outer part of the switch cable has a register which fits the lever housing but try as I could I couldn't get it to stay in.

I have looked at the detail of fitting a new aftermarket one but am still unclear.

What am I doing wrong or is it broken?

There is a little lug on the switch that locates in the hole on the bottom of the lever, you may need to bend the lug out a bit t to make it locate in the hole again.

What Steve said - the switch is held in place by a sprung tab that locates in a slot on the lever perch.

Check you still have the tab as shown in the photo below:
