Hi everyone. I've recently bought a 1999 TTR and I love it! I've only managed to go out once however, I know no-one near me who rides off road so I need to work out how to gain more experience. It's not that I'm shy, but I don't like to hold up the pack! I'm a fairly experienced road biker with a Tiger XRX and Indian Scout which I love to tour with. However, I want to get better on all terrains and experience the thrills I know off roading can give me. Not only that, but I would like to plan a big adventure soon - either the TET or TAT possibly. But I'd like to also have some kind of purpose to the trip - some good that I could do along the way. Any ideas welcome! Also any company could be welcome... I'm currently taking time out from my career to experience life on two wheels so anything is possible.

Thanks for such a great forum - I need to lower my TTR and have already broken both clutch and brake lever on my first outing - the latter I can do but the former can anyone suggest a mechanic near Surrey?

Also luggage for a trip.. I'd love to hear what luggage solutions people have come up with for a long trip.

Look forward to chatting more, meeting new friends and exploring the site.

Hi Louisa and welcome to the forum!

Delighted to hear that you are loving on the TTR smile

I am sure that you have found Steve's Totally TTRs online shop but, if not, you can buy after-market levers here and know that they will 100% fit and are also cheap enough to buy two of each so that you can carry a spare in your toolkit in case of any future get offs (or "badgers" as we call 'em in Devon). 

Both levers fit in the same way with 10mm-headed pivot bolts so, if you can replace the clutch lever the brake lever should be just as easy.

Why not give it a go and shout to us for help if you get stuck?

Depends - if your pivot bolts are worn or damaged then yes - otherwise re-use existing.

Just a hint when removing the brake lever, don't lose the return spring between the lever and mount - you will see what I mean when you take the lever off. Keep it safe until you get the new levers.

Hey Louisa, Welcome to the forum!

Have you tried looking for your local TRF club? They usually run trails in the local area and would probably let you tag along a few times before requiring membership.

I wouldn't worry about holding up the pack, the TRF are usually happy to help 😁

As you broke both levers, it sounds like you don't have any handguards, which will likely save the levers in a fall.

Id take a look at some alloy bar handguards for ruggedness (Cycra, Acerbis, Polisport are all good brands)

In terms of levers, there are some good shorty ones Steve sells on TotallyTTR, they're slightly shorter and more comfortable and also bend back when dropped.

Welcome to the forum and all things TTRsmile

I only have the black levers available in the shop at the moment, both brake and clutch are in the shop, they look very nice. My supplier is not getting any silver ones in for a while and to expensive for me to get anywhere else.

The shorter ones are no longer available in the shop, I can't sell any critical parts that I source direct from China anymore (this is for insurance reasons)crycrycry

Plenty of other goodies for you to have a look at.smile

You would always be welcome in Devon for a ride out.

Thanks, all of you! I'm not fussy, black will do! I'll go in and order them after I check the pivot bolt situation

I'll look into the local TRF too.

Devon ... would be lovely but possibly a bit far on the TTR as I don't have a trailer or a van at present. No indicators and mirrors = local excursions only!

Welcome to the forum!
Surrey TRF is very active and worthwhile contacting.
Devon is the spiritual home of the TTR250 and Devon TRF are the friendliest bunch I've come across! They also have an awesome number of trails to ride.
As for load carrying, I started a thread a while back, and you will see my solution. I am now building Mark 2 so watch that space...

I rode the Transpyrenean trail a couple of years back (before the TET came into being) It was not too technical and a great trip. Took 4 of us 12 days - this is where finding riding partners is tricky - lots want to do it, but few can commit to the time. A south-north crossing of Wales would be a good shorter warm-up trip perhaps?

Another thumbs up for Surrey TRF, ABR forum whilst a bit quiet of late has runs and several of the folk are from your way, they oft come up to Salisbury Plain for a pootle. From the south then northern France has a lot to offer by way of trails....which is why I am off there again on Friday, oh and welcome.

Hello and welcome Louisa , some great trails just across the water as Allen says , plus the Pyrenees is off-road playground , and if you wan to travel a bit further , look up Phil in France on the ABR forum he has a great place to stay in the LOT , and I'm sure the local expat riders will make you very welcome Enjoy your ttr great bikes
