Seem to have developed a starting problem on the ttr, where I put the choke and fuel on crank the engine, it starts straight away but the dies.

I can do this 4/5 times and eventually I can get it to keep going but before this it used to start on the button.

When its warm/hot there,s no problem I can start it easily.

Anyone had this prob or know a fix.

I'd say check your valve clearances, in my experience hard starting cold has usually been valves. How long since they were checked.

And jetting. And spark. Hows the spark plug look.

Never checked since I,v owned it, but apparently done by previous owner and I have done approx 3000 mls since ownership.
Spark plug looks ok but changed anyway................... fuel ???? same fuel in tank for 18 months due to bike not being used.

I'd empty the tank and put in a gallon of fresh petrol.

Drain the carb, put the fuel in the mower, fresh fuel I'd say it will go 1st time.
If it doesn't run quite right the jets might have gummed up and need a clean.

i add a splash of injector cleaner in the tank every now and then , had the carby apart after 4 years and its clean as a whistle . i have a feeling Australian fuel is more stable and doesn't turn to gunk like elsewhere though .

It still loses its mojo after a couple of months though.   The only time I have hard starting bikes is with stale fuel.  Put in fresh juice and they always fire up easier.

Long term I try and leave it full, I figure more fuel takes a lot longer to go off. For example I probably won't ride over Jan and Feb, its too hot and the bush is too dry. So my tanks full, come autumn I'll chuck the fuel into the ride on mower and fill up the bikes with fresh juice. And I've just about worn out the carb drain screw on mine letting out the old fuel so a new one is on order.

Well I drained all the petrol this morning including the carb and filled up with fresh, and bingo the old girl started first time on choke from cold without stopping.
Took her down some local lanes left her later on for a around 3 hours, started the motor again and she started instantly with no cutting out issues.
Got the engine nice and hot and changed the oil and filtre ready for some new year riding.

Well thanks for all the input and advice.... much appreciated I need a dunces hat to think fuel would keep for 18 months.
