Spark issue! Please help
Permalink

Hello this is my first time posting to this form I have a 99 TTR 250 and the battery is fully charged I have a brand new spark plug and I'm turning the engine over with the electric start and I can see a spark initially but does not spark after that, every time I hit the starter, could anybody tell me what that could be ??  also I took the cover off and the stator is filled with oil is that normal? Thanks for any help

Welcome to the forum Kelly - our first member from Angola!!!!   biggrinbiggrin

Your starting problem could be caused by many things but you are thinking it's the ignition system.

The first thing to do is check connections including the one just to the left of the bike above and behind the carb where the connectors from the stator feed into the loom, from there to the coil and then the HT lead to the spark plug, not forgetting the suppressor cap. One of the more difficult issues to resolver was a fault inside a suppressor cap.

Make sure you have continuity on the low tension leads and, if so, take off the suppressor cap and test that straight to the engine to see if you get a good spark at that point and, if so, that indicates a faulty suppressor cap.

Yes, there will be oil in the generator cover casing.

Maybe have a look here for more clues.

Brian

A intermittent bad stator is very hard to diagnose .

All the resistance can be right a spark present and it will still work on and off .

The only real way to tell if its the problem is replace it with a new one .

Have been flummoxed by issues only to eventually change the stator and all problems have gone away .

Its a not a cheap part but the only way to rule it out is change it  if there are no other obvious faults .

Good luck .
