I am still busy reading and searching, but I thought I would put this out there so long.

I was quite surprised when the new to me TTR felt like it topped out at 80km/h.  This bike was well looked after cosmetically, but mechanically not so much - i.e.  loved but not understood no  The bike takes forever to catch when it cranks on the e-start and feels quite gutless.  This is the main issue at the moment.  Once warm, it starts like a champ.  I checked the valve clearances today and they were spot on.

It is a 2006 with 10.5k kms.  I am busy doing a top to bottom on the bike at the moment, but have not reached the carb yet - shouldn't have read how easily those float pin tabs break...  I suspect the float or float valve is wrong.  When I changed the oil today there was a very strong smell of fuel in the old oil.

On the cold start side, the choke makes no difference what so ever.

Any ideas of a direction to go in?

I just popped into the garage to go check the fuel screw setting.  It was slightly more than 2.5 out.  I will strip the carb to see what size jets are fitted.  Is the screw adjusting air or fuel?

With such a low mileage the valves and pistons should be OK unless the engine was mistreated e.g. run low on oil. In which case a leak down or compression check might be in order.

A quick check on whether the carb is wrongly jetted is to test ride it with the airbox cover off. If it runs better then the mixture may be too rich. If it runs worse then the mixture might be OK or on the lean side.

Does the air filter look clean and is it sticky from filter oil?

Brian

Hi Brian

I was waiting for the air filter to dry since yesterday.  We are having a damp rainy spell at the moment.  I will oil the filter and take it for the equivalent of your MOT this morning.  It seemed over oiled, but the PO said that it has always started this way.

The first thing I did was pull the silencer to look into the header.  All good there unless the restriction is on the engine side.

The bike dies from the choke on idle (cold and hot) and won't start with choke when cold.  That sounds rich then right?  I turned the fuel/air screw in and took it out 1.5 turns.  Cold start was much improved, however hot starting was terrible - pilot too big?  I still need to strip the carb, but am weary to fiddle too much now.  My first ride in the bush for a while is coming up on Sunday and I don't want to risk fiddling too much.

I am busy rebuilding my 2005 WR450, once that is complete it will be the TTR's turn for some TLC.
