still not charging after $410 mechanical bill...

A few months ago my 2011 model TTR-250 had a flat battery. Bought new battery.

3 weeks later flat again. Brought it to an independent mechanic. He said "needs new regulator". Charged me A$280 for new regulator + labor and he charged the battery.

3 weeks later flat again. He said "battery probably damaged because it got flat before". I bought new battery for A$70

3 weeks later flat again. He checked it again and said, he's got no idea what's going on. He said that when he puts HIS regulator from his bike into mine, it charges properly and when he puts my (new) regulator into his bike, it charges as well, but my (new) regulator won't charge in my bike. So he swapped the regulators (gave me the old regulator of his bike) and charged the battery. He charged me another A$130 for labor.

3 weeks later flat again. He said "must be the stator then". I said "you should know beforehand, you charge a high professional rate of A$100 per hour, not an apprentice rate who's not sure what he's doing." He's all defensive and doesn't wanna admit any wrongdoing. He said, he couldn't check the stator because he doesn't have the specs from Yamaha... He wouldn't make up for his error of judgement and I'm A$480 down and bike still not charging.

I push started it for a few days, but it got harder and harder every day. Now it won't even push start or kick start anymore.  I need to mention that this bike was ALWAYS VERY HARD to kick start since it was brand new. It would easily take 20 attempts to kick start it. But it's completely dead now. Motor is good and when it runs, it runs smoothly. Has never been abused, a couple of very minor crashes (losing the rear wheel and got insided) at less than 20km/h.

What could be wrong? I'm reluctant to give it to another mechanic, simply because it's so bloody hard to find honest mechanics where I live. Almost everyone is lying and ripping off customers.

Put a volt meter on the battery & check static voltage & then recheck with the engine running, if the voltage does not increase check battery cables bot postive & earth, is the bike draining the battery or not charging ?

Hmmm - hope you can find another mechanic to use in future!

I hope you didn't throw the first new battery away!

Terry's advice is good. Take a deep breath and see exactly what the problem is.

Lots of info here http://ttr250.activeboard.com/t53918258/charging-problems-regulatorrectifier-and-stator-issues/

I'm unable to do those things. I have neither the equipment nor the talent. I'm pretty sure it's not charging, because after running it half an hour and then turn off, I have to push start it again. But why has it become increasingly impossible to push start? When there was still a tiny bit of charge left in the battery (not enough for the starter motor), I was still able to push start it. But since the battery is completely empty, I cannot push start it anymore.

You need a bit of juice in the battery for it to start. Ed had the same issues when his battery went completely flat.

See http://ttr250.activeboard.com/t63786489/documenting-australias-remotest-community-with-ttr250-ed-gol/

Do you have access to a battery charger?

Well that explains why I can't push start it. Thanks for letting me know.

I'm really disappointed in Yamaha that the stator is already damaged in a 6 year old bike, driven only 20'000 kms on sealed roads. It's probably going to cost me another A$1000 to get that fixed.

Also the speedo stopped working last year. In all honesty, I expect those things to last 20 years, not break after 5-6 years of careful use.

I'm sick of throwing away money to greedy, lying mechanics and corporations and honestly feel like selling it and getting back on a pushbike.

Speedo might be a very easy fix, check the 3 point tab washer in the gearing, usual suspect and a cheap fix.

Check out my shop for parts https://totallyttrs.com/

Not the crazy prices you are being charged and lot's of great advice on how to check and mend thing's on this forum.

Just checked your a bit far away . I'd check and fix it for nothing . I've never had charging troubles with any Yamaha's . a couple of things upset stators 1. Excess load and old oil as old oil tends to attack the insulation so reg oil changes and not sitting for long periods in old oil and of course some rare ones just die

You can get digital  voltmeters of eBay for a couple of dollars .

Things you can do yourself take a close look at the wiring make sure the plugs are all good . have you owned it from new has some one made changes to the wiring . are there any accessories fitted of like ed found a bodge job on the head light .
