Has anyone actually completely failed o get them to bleed, or am I going to be the first furious

Rebuilt the master cylinder, filled the caliper with fluid (well, poured it into the bleed hole anyway), filled the pipe with fluid, filled the cylinder with fluid, still nothing cry

Take the pipe off the cylinder, pull lever, fluid comes out of the hole, take the pipe off the caliper, pull the lever, fluid comes out of the pipe, but nothing out of the caliper bleed hole even with the nipple out cry

Tried leaving it with  the lever pulled over night, no difference, I'm running out of ideas confuse

Might try buying one of those one way bleed pipes (pipe with a rubber pipe on the end, blocked end and a slit in the side) as I can't find the one I used to have .......

Oh, and it's a new long brake pipe from our trusty supplier smile (Although it's been on there since I bought it and the caliper from Brian smile )

try pressing the piston right in then put a piece of wood against the disc to the pads on both sides so the piston or the sliders cant move be paietient it should bleed up when you get the feeling of no air build all back up put lace clip /cable tie on lever to handlebars with lever pulled in leave over night this should remove any more air

always a prob...
air likes to travel up & the bleed nipple is at the bottom...

I can bleed the front brake system in 6 or 8 pumps....
I put the master cylinder on a old pair of bars and put it on the ground
below the caliper.... then the air can travel UP to the bleed nipple...

Thanks Pete smile

Just answered my own question.

Tried your method in reverse, i.e. put up my step ladders, put a plank across at a suitable height, put caliper on plank (suitably wedged), could hear air wooshing when I pulled the lever, tried pouring fluid down the line and pulling lever, nothing. took pipe off bar end, no fluid coming out, so I reckon the caliper is foo barred cry

Tried to get pitons out of caliper, and managed to break the top off of one cry Strange sort of design, cover plate with a little tablet shaped piece underneath and the bit under that is not moving at all cry

So it's the caliper I bought off Brian 3 or so years ago, which is perfect in every other way, sod's law. I suppose as it's been standing for all that time with no fluid, it's seized up, poor thing.

Hi Michael. Sorry to hear of the problems!

I am lucky to have a high pressure airline to use to push out the pistons.

I will have a word with Steve about sending you a replacement front caliper from his stock - at my expense.

If you can send me your dodgy caliper (MyHermes is the best way as the parcel is automatically tracked and insured) then I can fit new pistons and seals and give it to Steve to put back in stock.

Hopefully there was no damage done to the caliper body trying to get the pistons out wink

Sorry you have had the hassle.

Brian

Hi Brian, I really didn't intend to suggest that there was any fault on your part all. I'm sure had I put it all together 3 years ago it would have been fine.

If you do intend to do that for me, you're being more than generous, and maybe I could stump up the cost of the bits and your time to do the re-furb.

Let me know what you think smile

Don't like the thought of one of my refurbed parts seizing up Malcolm so am keen to put it right wink

When do you need to use your TTR? If it can wait for a week to 10 days then I can repair yours and return it which saves getting Steve involved.

Brian

It is indeed a topnotch service, I should be more surprised, but I remember how good Brian was when I bought the bits from him 3 years ago. Picked them up from his house, got loads of advice, a really good deal, AND Trish made me a great cheese and pickle sarnie for lunch! smilesmile

I was so keen to snap up a deal from Steve though that I bought the replacement caliper before anyone saw my post, which has made Brian's offer a little more complicated.

LOL - love the sarnie story - made Trish laugh as well. Good memories biggrin

I will have a word with Steve and I am sure we can sort something out. Depends on whether he has already sent the caliper...........

Brian

Got the caliper back from Brian rebuilt and ready to go, well pleased and what a gent you are Brian smile

The bad news is that I still can't get the brakes to work in any way shape or form. I've tried leaving the lever pulled over night, raising the caliper to above lever height and pouring fluid into bleed nipple via a funnel/plastic tube arrangement, bleeding normally, and still no joy. cry

Any suggestions welcome smile

You need to have a go at pushing it the other way pipe on the calliper nipple cracked open with a large Syringe push it up hill. but first thing make sure the nipple is not blocked up I have seen that before as well
hope that helps

Well, today my brake pump arrived so I attempted to sort the bike front brake out, but still no joy cry Struggling to get it to hold a vacuum with the nipple closed even though I can take nipple out and get it to hold a vacuum by putting my finger over the hole hmm Does pull fluid through, but not a lot, so I'm wondering if there's a blockage in the caliper.....

Hi Mike

I feel your pain!  cry

It is highly unlikely (although not impossible!) that there is a blockage in the caliper. I blew through with an airline before reassembling plus the holes from the banjo entry to the back of the pistons are quite big.

I am suspicious of the master cylinder. Are you sure you reassembled it correctly with the new seals?

If you take the hose off the caliper and pump the lever do you get any pressure? Squeeze the end of the hose (the banjo fitting) between finger and thumb to give resistance.

thanks Brian just had a lunch stop, so I'm heading back out now.

Will try the hose test and see if I get some kind of result. Pretty sure I built it up correctly, as I copied what was there and that was working until I stripped it to fit the longer hose. New hose has swivels at each end which were loose and leaking to start with but I've tightened them up now, and not getting and leakage there.

Anyway, will try the hose test and get back again later.......

OK, I did your check Brian, and no pressure at all in the brake line, although before I removed it from the caliper I had been getting fluid through the nipple when I pulled the lever ? Then took the brake line off the cylinder and pressed the lever, and nothing comes out of the hole confuse

Anyway, dismantled the cylinder and the seals are on the piston correctly as per the pictures on this thread:

http://ttr250.activeboard.com/t57791592/brake-master-cylinder-refurb/

So will have a brew for morale and go out and re-assemble it all.......hmm

FIXED it! biggrin

Good call by you Brian smile piston was all correctly assembled, but when I put it back in I checked with just a little fluid, and, pulling lever, couldn't get anything out of the brake line hole. Tried putting my finger over it but no pressure. Then just happened to notice that when I slapped my finger over the hole, a tiny bubble came out of what I didn't realise was a hole next too the hole in the base of the cylinder. Repeated the finger on quickly then off a few times , more bubbles and then I started getting pressure when I pulled the lever. It must have got blocked when I first cleaned out the cylinder. So I gave it a good clean, and blew it out (lovely taste brake fluid bleh) and when I reassembled it this time it all worked biggrin

Bled it with the brake pump again, and this time I got loads of fluid, loads of bubbles and eventually, BRAKE WORKING !! biggrin

Thanks again all, and especially Brian for your advice and support smile

Mike
