annoying.....worrying rattle

hey guys,

just bought a ttr and, after a short ride im sure all's not well within the engine cases no

its noisy....as in it rattles at certain revs, couldnt decide if its a cam chain rattle, valve clearances or piston noise....or something worse !!!

whipped of the valve cover, set it to tdc and found that the valves are a little tight (to be sorted this week), whilst i was there i checked the cam timing and found this....

the timing marks aint quite level time for a new chain ??

also did a compression check, its not 100% accurate as my tester wouldnt sit 'square' with the plug hole so had a little bit of compression leaking past but it showed 115psi, cold with wot

going to whip the barrel off during the week to make sure all looks ok in the piston/rings department

apart from the rattle the bike starts and runs nicely enough.....its just a horrid rattle that you just cant ignore no

cheers guys

Has it got a decompressor body in the cylinder head?, as it has been known to cause such a rattle.

Been thinking about your rattle!

Does it increase with engine revs?

Is it the same if the TTR is stationary or moving?

Does pulling in the clutch make any difference?

Is it the same in all the gears?

Are all the engine bolts tight?

Brian

hey Brian

the rattle isnt there at idle and doesn't start until (approx) 2500/3000 rpm and it does it no matter if its stationary, on the move, clutch in or out, in gear or not, under load or coasting

iv no idea if it goes away at higher revs as im trying for damage limitation so have been treating it gently

all bolts are tight, i even double checked the exhaust heat shield, as if that were loose it'd be as close to the noise as i could explain - it even sounds to be in that area although i know noise travels around as isnt always that easy to find

i have a mate doing the valve clearances for me so once thats done if it still makes the noise (which i suspect it will) ill dig in deeper, tbh the bikes a tatty old mess so if this means a strip down then at least it'l be a good excuse to get the frame and tank blasted/painted, seat recovered and a thousand other little bits cleaned up

i actually bought it for the mrs but its miles to tall for here to feel confident on - happily for me as im quite taken with the old thing biggrin

This is a bit of a long shot but, here goes.
I'm new to ttr's but when I got mine the previous owner told me I would hear a rattle when I was riding it but that it was nothing to worry about as it was the chain guide/roller. It does make a bit of a noise but I'm not sure if that's a problem peculiar to my particular bike or if they all do it?

If running a 14 tooth sprocket  the chain touches the case saver .at certain speeds sounds nasty . easy fix take the case saver off you will see where its hitting grind/file about a mm off

I had the engine mount behind the starter come loose (settled in from new ) and it sounded like the gearbox was about to go bang nipped it up and alls good

If the connection between the header and muffler is loose it can vibrate

The bashplate can rattle / vibrate the engine sounds terrible when you first ride with one on

well guys, finally got time to strip the top end off the motor and annoyingly, other than the previously mentioned valve clearances i found nothing to blame for the noise !!

on the plus side i found nothing worn/broken either so i guess thats something lol !!!

it all looks pretty fresh in there, the piston and bore look like new ( btw, the numbers on the the top of the piston are...

8646D200
04806-12

and underneath is stamped.....

W4106-2

cant find a vernier in my cave mess so is that a standard piston or oversized ??

im going to replace the cam-chain while its in bits as, typically, the speedo doesnt work so who knows how many miles its done

cheers guys

Did you ever sort out your issue? It sounds very similar to a question I just posted regarding a rattly noise that I was suspecting was the cam chain. After purchasing a new cam chain and while performing the swap i noticed that my oil pump gear is quite sloppy. I was able to wiggle it rotationaly and in and out on the shaft and it would make a noise that I think is what I am hearing when the bike was running. I haven't reassembled the bike yet, so I can't speak to if the new cam chain has helped or not (though I suspect it won't make a difference since it appeared to be the exact same length as the old one).
I would be interested to hear if when you get into the repair if you find the same situation with your oil pump gear.
Cheers
