fuel tank rust removal

Hey guys been a long time since I lurked here. 

Ive run into a conundrum  my tank had a leak which has recently been fixed but as it was left for awhile the tank has rusted somewhat I'm using vinegar to remove the rust and Ive removed the fuel tap  to get ready to pour in the vinegar but i cant figure out a way to block the holes to stop the vinegar from leaking out. Ive tried putting plastic over the 3 holes for the full tap and duck taping them up but i cant seem to get it to seal properly as the moment the vinegar touched the tape the glue lets go. Any suggestions on how to block the fuel tap and 2 screw holes would solve my problem.

 

it would be appreciated  greatly as i want to ride again.

Hi Brian

Why not leave the tap in place and put the vinegar in through the petrol cap?

If the vinegar doesnt work too well, theres a product made by Bilt Hamber called Deox-C that is brilliant for rust removal.

Hey guys thanks for the suggestions but its solved now. I was told if i left the fuel **** on the vinegar would do something to it no idea what since it will be sitting but i made up a little template and cut out a piece of steel plate just big enough to cover the hole and uses the screw holes for the pet**** to stay in place. Underneath the plate is a thin rubber seal kind of acting like a little gasket. Keeps it all together without leaking, now to watch 9 liters of vinegar do its thing.

I tested if the vinegar on a piece of rusty metal the other day left the vinegar and really badly rusted steel in the bucket for a day piece of steel came out much better then it went in the white vinegar came out looking like brown vinegar.

 That brown vinegar may make the chips on the outside of the tank taste better. confusebiggrinconfusebiggrin

no chips on the tank been rewelded and my own little repaint the old OE is a bit messy and a tad rusty in places but still goes strong ( now i want fish and chips...)
