 Started having this issue today

https://youtu.be/neEksF5ntcs

went to start the bike and it just made a noise so I pop the cover and ran into this issue. About three days ago I noticed some noticeable binding and hard starting and it kept getting worse  I just got into the factory service manual to see what I have to replace looks like I'll be busy tonight.

Sounds like the starter sprag not engaging to me. Not a difficult job, just parts are a bit expensive. Also check that the centre boss that the sprag teeth engage on is smooth, as indicated in Brian's tutorial:
www.ttr250.com/Sprag_replacement/TTR_sprag_replacement.htm
I think bikes are like girlfriends - once you start giving them some attention, they get a taste for it
Ride safe,
Simon.

Lol yeah, i was looking at the one way on the diagram of the Fsm. Not a good timing. I have two days to go before i leave for a week with it and wont have the parts in time.

Holy balls at the price of that one way!

Not cheap by any means. The Yamaha Majesty YP 250 scooter type bike i think shares the same setup from what i can gather on part numbers. The starters are definitely the same bar the rear mounting plate and i think that I looked into the rest of the parts at one time and i think they were the same if that is of any help to you.

John.

I have bought stuff from China in the past.  While it can certainly be cheaper, I think in some cases, it's false economy(quality wise) and can slow down the repair if faulty/not right. I've had too many sub standard products to run the risk...especially as you need it quickly and want it right for your intended trip.

This is a better place to get the stuff from & you know it will be right....(do the job once and right)-job sorted!

Thanks guys i have a solution to my problem and to share what the issue is when a spragg fails, there is a tiny pin that holds each piece in place that breaks off. I lost 8 pins so when the last one failed that side became unable to evenly distribute the load.

Hi Brian

I have seen that before. I can only think it happens when a worn sprag kicks back.

What is the solution you have found?

I know you are under a time constraint cry

Brian

The pin merely convinces the cam to stay forward so it will rotate properly and not push out. A quick fix is to use a hard rubber that will sit there and push it in the same manner. It will likely drag and cause excessive wear, but if you HAVE TO start the bike for a day or two it will work while your new one is coming.

edit: i wouldnt unless you had to. I just took a different bike in this case.
