my rear brake is very poor it locks the wheel for mot but at speed is very poor piston not siezed slider ok  been out today to bed in new pads not very good

Air or very old fluid in the system?

Otherwise is the hose damaged in any way allowing it to bulge under pressure rather than put it all into the piston?

will check that brian but the pedal is not spongy i would have thought this should lock back wheel at reasonble speed but it does not

Is it the new pads? or was it doing the same before?

the bike had new pads when i bought it steve but piston & sliders siezed & pins for pads threads siezed i sorted all that bled brakes pedal not spongy i am wondering if pads are too hard ive been out many times to bed in new pads thats all i can think of pads too hard no friction/ grip or has any one more ideas thanks for you patience/reply john

hi brian they were fitted to the bike when i bought it so i dont know but they were new

Maybe try a pair of Steve's? Cheap enough - see here.

I use them all the time and have a good rear brake wink

I tried some others from local bike shop which were a bit all or nothing. Much prefer the shop ones..

Felt quite dead and ineffective until you pressed hard then locked up easily. Kind of nothing in between. Changed pads and feels more as though 50 percent pressure gives 50 percent braking... Hope that makes sense
