Crackling noise from exhaust

I Cleaned my carb (it was really dirty the diaphragm had nearly disintegrated) the previous owner had also stripped most of the screws, ez outs saved the day multiple times. when i put it back on the bike it started easier than ever before and it idled (it used to just die) then i gave a little twist to the throttle and it made crackling noise. it seems to go away when i go past 1/4 throttle. Any ideas on what it might be?

Crackling like a misfire? Has it ever run properly in it's current state? (I mean has it been modified - exhaust/intake mods/rejetting - and stopped running properly since?) I wonder if it's still struggling for fuel and running a bit lean?
My brother's solution would be keep it wide open throttle - rule number one: never back off!

Carb inlet stub spilt or cracked? sometimes hard to see as the rubber comes off the metal inner and you can't tell unless you take it off the bike.

Hope that helps.

Steve

I ended up figuring it out it was running super rich because the needle was not in the right position. I wasn't paying close enough attention when I put it back in the carb. I was a bit worried I wouldn't be able to take it out this weekend. First ride of the season.
