I ride solo regularly.  I carry a 100' rope in my pack but it wouldn't have helped me in this case.

Very rare to find open pit shafts in the US anymore, thankfully!

I ride in an old phosphate mine in Florida there are a few deep pits and trenches but nothing on that level thankfully.

Scary stuff - amazing the bloke and his bike weren't more damaged!

Bit worrying that it happened on an organised trail ride.........

A bit scary, I've seen a few old mineshafts, not that big though.

And I'd hope my mates might would be a bit quicker have a look in the hole.
