Cam chain alignment

engine was making a rattling noise so took the engine casing off and had a look inside. do you think I need a new chain?

check for backlash from crank to cam is there any

Take the tensioner out and see how far at the end of its travel it is

I would change it. It's definitely stretched a bit so needs doing, plus it will take out one possible cause of the rattles. It's a more daunting task to think about than to actually do! Just be methodical, and there's plenty of instruction on here if you're unsure of anything.
