I've got a good handle on road tyres, from sports/touring through to sports and road-legal track day tyres but when it comes to off-road!!??

Mostly it seems when one dives in to a manufacturers web site off-road section you get straight to the hard-core MX and Enduro tyres that aren't really intended for any tarmac.

All I'm going on at the moment is the mark/space ratio, which seems to vary from ~70/30 for my Trail Wing 301/302s, through to 30/70 or more for some of the MX stuff!

My trail wings have been OK but TBH I've got nothing to compare them to and being a newbie problems are more likely down to me than tyres! However, bumped in to some folks at the weekend with a KLX250 and CRF250L, and new like me, and he raved about Maxxis Motocross IT tyres, which looked nearer 50/50 to me.

Just wondering how spaced you can go when needing to do 5-10 miles of tarmac to get to a trail? Trails near me are a bit of everything, including chalk downs, although not much sand TBH.

I've looked at MAxxis C6006, which looks close to the Trail Wings, and Pirelli MT21 rallycross which look a bit more serious.

Any info/experiences much appreciated! :)

My recollection of wet chalk is that it is like riding on glass!

My recommendation is that you go for a trails-type rear tyre such as the Pirelli MT43 which can be run at silly low pressures and have strong sidewalls so don't mind the road work.

For the front you can use a more aggressive road-legal tyre such as the Michelin Comp IV.

If you are only doing 5 / 10 miles of tarmac i would go with a Michlin AC10 rear .. like black glue...
DOT rated... Michlin state they are only for short tarmac sections....
The front AC10 is rubbish..

for a 50/50 tyre I use the Shinko 700 front & rear on my XT660R... If thats what yer after they
are as good as any 50/50 tyre....

look on the .... Golden Tyre or MotoZ web sites they both make very good tyres..

Thanks for the replies and all good information.

From what I can gather, here and there, the Michelin AC10's seem to divide opinion, and sometimes used on the front and sometimes on the rear.

You ask a good question - what am I after?

I think I'm looking for something with a slightly lower mark/space ratio, 60/40 - 50/50. I think that counts out the Shinko 700 and possibly the MT43 trials tyre. I've seen some Dunlop D952's, which I believe are road legal - are they the decendent of the TTR's OE fitment...? They appear to be pretty cheap - maybe there is a reason for that though! Plus the sizes are different to what I'm seeing elsewhere.

There's no rush at the moment so I'll keep researching,

Cheers

+1 on the AC10 rear and also hate the front. Just got 5000k on an ac10 rear (120/90) on my DRZ 400 - about 3500k on the road commuting to work.

Currently using and really like the Pirelli XCMH front and rear on the TTR. Next will be trying the Motoz Tractionator I/T front and rear for a comparison. I have a second set of rims for my TTR with Dunlop D605's on, they seem great on road and not too bad off road.

I got the wrong section on the Dunlop site and missed their on/off road models.

Looks like the D606 would be what they would class as a classic trail tyre. Appears to be quite expensive, relative to other choices, but maybe reflects longer road life possibly...?

I think I'm sort of starting to lean towards the Pirelli MT21's - quite cheap on oponeo and available in 120/80-18 rear, so I assume it will fit fine.

For what its worth Vinnie the D606 rear and the MT21 front are a very popular combination of tyre. Probably one of the most popular recommendations I see about for the DRZ and adventure riding. Especially in Australia. Apparently the D606 front lets go easily? But the D606 rear outlasts the MT21 pretty well. Haven't used them myself.

My advice would be don't get too caught up in choosing, they are not all THAT different.
