Fitting fuel injection - might be an interesiting project?

Hello everyone!

I have had my TTR for a couple of months now, but haven't really got to ride her much. I seized the opportunity last weekend however to get a decent ride in for the first time.

Despite enjoying the bike, it became clear that it is not carburating too brilliantly. It's ok to ride, don't get me wrong, but on small / part throttle, it is definitely hesitating a little, like it is running a bit lean. It's not drastic, but it is annoying nonetheless. Looking round the forum, and taking into account that it is 12 years old now, it would probably benefit from a full carb overhaul.

I used to quite enjoy fiddling with carbs, jetting and that years ago, but now I am old (44!) I find it a bit of a ball-ache to be honest, and I have been spoiled by fuel injection for too long. Which got me thinking....

I had a look around the net, and have found an American company doing small fuel injection kits for around 500 dollars, which would suit this little 250 single. As a serial 'fiddler' I think I would quite enjoy fitting the system to my TTR, and seeing how well I could get it to work.

What do we reckon? Worth a bash or a complete waste of time? If I do fit it, then I will provide a write-up on here, obviously.

I definitely think I would read the write up. I read practical performance car and fitting emerald type ecu with jenvey fuel injection to carb and points carbs type cars. If set up right it's in another league.
Don't know how significant it wold be having ridden a klx with injector, but innovation should be encouraged.....

 Thanks bud! Yeah, I think so too...to be honest I am sure that a carb re-build would sort it out, however I love a fiddle and I thought it might be a fun project!

I trained with Bosch and Lucas as a repairer for their systems .

There have been aftermarket kits for cars but I hadn't noticed these kits . Looks good as long as the throttle body is a good fit and the cdi /control unit works with the ttr pick up it should work ok 

An easy weekend job . If I had a few dollars to spare I'd give it a go 

If you contact the manufacturer and ask about Yamaha fitment if they say ok .go for it

Hi Ray, welcome to the forum Buddy

My advise is this:

Do the airbox mod, jet mod, maybe the exhaust mod or aftermarket exhaust, clean, service and adjust the carb, it will be bullet proof
mine has never played up, doesn't hesitate, starts first go

Having said that, your right it might be an interesting project !

I'm wondering about the pump... as they usaly need to be in tank for the fuel
to cool them....

It's an inline pump the fuel curulates round through the pressure regulator and back to the tank which keeps it cool 

With a bit of fuel bleeding off through the injector as needed

 So it has a water jacket or in this case a fuel jacket ?

Good way of putting it 

A and the heat is disapated in the tank 

The system only runs on 2amps or 24watts so minimal heat anyway .

I'd love to see a fuel injected ttr - automatic compensating for altitude, mappable on a rolling road for optimum performance... You'd probably spend the same time setting it up as you would fiddling around with jetting, and I suspect there would not be a huge difference in performance vs a well set up carb, but there's the altitude thing going for it. Go for it - a great little project to bring the ttr up to date a bit.

Thanks for all your replies.

Yeah, I think I am quite committed now to doing this, I don't have millions of spare time due to my job, so it would be a nice little winter project for me - realistically I can see it taking me a month or so, of the odd day and evening.

Also, I'm quite (very!) fussy about engineering and installations, so I would be taking time to make it look as factory as possible, with everything routed neatly and as hidden away as possible.

As another poster has said, it's unlikely to produce anything more in the way of performance - but that's not what I am after really, it's more to do with the fit and forget element and perfect fuelling in all conditions.

Anyway I have just emailed the supplier, with some questions and photographs of the bike etc. to see if they will be happy that it is a viable fit and will work on the TTR.
