Hello everybody ( sorry simpsons fan).I feel like I've got to put my dr Nickes  head on though. Just bought a 93 ttr with poorley engine, Was told bent valve. upon investigation I have found the valves are perfectly straight. However the piston is very scored on the inlet side only. Not sure if this is down to oil starvation  or air filter failure. I'm going with oil starvation as the gudgeon pin has a bit of blueing on it. Does any one know if this may be due to oil pump on way out, do they play up?. Or is it just a case of the last owner not keeping his eye on oil level?. Any way it will be back together soon. Looking forward to doing the green lanes again round surrey with TRF. Last bike (xt600e) sold in feb and had withdrawal ever since. First time in over 30 years I've been bike less. no MAN MUST HAVE  BIKE, BEER, AND PEACE TO ENJOY THEM.

Welcome to the fold Steve!
Fairly unusual for the oil pump to give up I think, although I expect TTRFan on here will pipe up soon if I'm wrong. More likely poor maintenance I would think. totallyttrs.com do a barrel and piston kit ready to fit I believe.
Cheers,
Simon.

Thanks Simon, You are really just confirming my thoughts that it is just poor maintenance.

The oil pumps on the TTR rarely fail but you can check for damage to the surfaces of the rotor and casing by popping the top off.

Your symptoms are consistent with the commonest danger to TTR engines i.e. running with very little or no oil cry

If we get a day of good weather we are going to try and walk it. How long could it take to walk a 5 mile round trip across the bogs? evileyeconfuseevileyedisbeliefblehdoh

Hi Everyone, Thanks for all your responses and advise.

Please see the pictures, as you will notice all the damage is on the inlet side which I thought was a bit strange. I have sourced another Barrel and piston on Ebay and ordered a new set of ring from total ttrs. I would have used the barrel again as I think it would clean up with some acid and rehone. I already had it in mind to replace the cam chain and  regrind valves etc so not really a major issue. The bike has only done around 8500 miles and the barrel wasn't really showing any wear or lipping.

Ooh, that's not pretty!
Looking at the top ring and molten ally I'd say she'd seized at some point. Definitely check the head for flatness before rebuild in case it's warped a bit.
