They do get dirty thats for sure. And the frames always flake paint off and rust in places....dont think i have see a TTR that hasn't got missing frame paint and rust spots on the joins

Sounds like mine, I have red oxide primer painted all over the place, mostly on the welds as you say

The first restorations that I did involved very time consuming wire brushing etc to remove as much rust as possible followed by spraying the frames. Sadly the subframes soon became rusty again and the paint quickly rubbed off the boot area which was very disheartening after all the work
In the end I gave up and powder coated the frames on my restos and this lasts a lot better
