Ttr250 help!

So i have just got a TTR white with purple wheels model off my neighbour. It's been sitting in his garage ages. basically he put a new cam chain in it the bike is not the best condition. i got the bike off him in a bits. the cam chain is new but bike has no camshafts he gave me those to fit On which I did. Basically the cam timing doesnt line up. he has since told me that he turned the engine with the camshafts off i got it as a little project but now thiking it's hardwork!!

is this hard to sort out? Think he has messed it up as it doesn't matter which way I turn the engine to line up the cam marks they are never in the right place....

Hi Steve and welcome to the forum.

You will need to get the engine to TDC, pop out the tensioner and take the caps off one of the camshafts so that you can move the camshafts into their correct positions.

You may find some of this thread useful http://www.ttr250.com/Removing_Cylinder_Head/TTR_head_removal.htm

Good luck but if you need help just ask wink

Thanks for the reply, I have been reading a lot of the write ups on here that are really good I must say. I have asked my neighbour to be honest with me so I have got half a chance!! He told me that he turned the engine with the cam tensioner out by mistake and the chain slipped around the sprockets. Probaly why nothing is lining up then!

So if I put the chain on get the engine to TDC take the tensioner out then I can move the sprocket into position? My only worry is how I then get the second one right? Other thing I was worried about is being at the right TDC. My neighbour nice as he is has made a right dogs dinner of this!

People should know there own ability and not touch things!!

Cool, one thing TTR fan I looked at that link re cylinder head removal, the markings on the photo in that link of the cam sprocket markings are different to what page 4-62 of the workshop manual show?

Yes that's clear now I couldn't see the E on the intake can or I on the exhaust one that's why, (in manual) so if I take caps off tonight put cams in right place, put caps back on and tensioner in then rotate the engine (clockwise) I should solve it? Or am I being thick again this thing is a mind fook

So long as you have turned the flywheel to TDC ( difficult to hold it there as the magnets try and move it which is why I get Mrs TTR to assist by holding a socket on the flywheel bolt if I can!) and the camshafts line up as in the photo and diagram you will be fine.

Post up a photo if you want us to double check wink

Fit the tensioner and check again to make sure nothing has moved and, if it all looks OK, turn the engine over using a socket on the flywheel bolt to make sure everything turns freely. Take the spark plug out to make this easier. Also do a simple compression check by putting your thumb over the plug hole and it should be forcibly pushed off if things are good. That is just to make sure your neighbour hasn't bent a valve by having the cam timing wrong no

Sorry - only just got back from the pub.

Looks good to me too biggrin

Why do you think it is wrong? Cam lobes and marks as per the manual.

If you undo the drain screw on the carb float bowl does fuel flow out?

Yes I have fuel coming out of there, also the fuel comes out the fuel tap on tank I have tried to start it a few times now and it's dry the plug I would have expected it to be fuelly

I would expect the plug to show some petrol and the exhaust to start chucking out petrol fumes.

Have a look through here for a good check list.

Put a small amount of oil down the bore - enough to go around the outside of the piston and sit on the rings.

If compression doesn't improve then there may be a bent or damaged valve cry

 Hi Steveo

Just reading this again, if he turned it over on the starter without the tensioner in, he has defo bent the valvescry That is why you have no compression, don't skip it yetnono You may have a bit of work to do, but all is not lost.
