Ominous noise.

eHelp my bike is making an ominous rattle.  It sounds like the rear chain is knocking on the engine cases but it isn't because I have just put a new chain and sprockets  (14/48) on.  The noise seems to come mainly from the left side of the engine and originally seemed to only be when the bike was moving but now also happens sometimes when stationary.  It sounds a bit like someone has put a food mixer into a can of nuts and bolts.  I changed the sprag clutch for a new one although the old one seems fine.  I changed the oil and the oil seemed okay but there were some very small bits of swarf in the filter.

My thoughts at the moment are that it could be the main bearings, any other easier and cheaper to fix things to look at.  I am hoping to go to the Taffy on Friday but it does not sound good at the moment.

Thanks

if it didn't make the noise before you changed, sprockets, sprag etc ,I would double check everything you did to start with,
could be loose sprocket and thats not good, give it a look over again , it might be nothing ......hopefully

OK - fessing up time!

My bro had battery troubles at the end of the Saturday's A2E event. He left his TTR with me and, after testing, it turned out the stator had failed.

As is my custom, I laid the bike on its side and stripped out the old stator and replaced it with a good used one.

Got it all back together and started it up. Initially sounded fine but within a few seconds developed a noise similar to that you describe.

Stripped it down again and discovered that one of the dowels had been dragged out of the generator cover by the strong flywheel magnet when I refitted the cover and had got itself caught between the stator and the back of the flywheel.

After a very thorough clean up another good used stator was fitted but this time the dowels were fitted to the engine side so there was no chance of them going AWOL when trying to position the cover. A GOOD TIP FOR ANYONE ELSE DOING THIS JOB!

Not saying you have done the same but it's a possibility!

Hi, Thanks for the replies.  After your advice about the jetting Brian the bike was running the best it ever has.  I think the running rich may have been caused by the aftermarket silencer having a severe kink in it.  I now have put the OE one back on and it runs fine apart from the noise.

I took the oil filter out again today and after only 35 miles it had some swarf in it so it doesn't look good.

Luckily a friend has offered to lend me a DR 250 to do the Taffy on so I think I'll take him up on that and have another look next week.  To be honest I'm seriously tempted to look at old adventurer's bike which looks great and flog this one for spares or repair as I don't think I've got the time to sort it out.  Anyway time for a whiskey to mull things over.

Cheers Jak

An easy fix. With the 14 tooth sprocet the chain touches the case saver as it comes of the front spoocket

just file a bit off the end of the csae saver it will prob have signs of where its been touching

very common and sounds bad

Mine was the chain hitting the sprocket cover. I had to cut a section out.
I'm sure there's a pic on here somewhere showing the problem.

I have fitted one of Brian's sprocket covers and just fitted a new chain roller so I don't think it is this.  I am really hoping it is something simple as I already have a list of jobs to do in the garage, including finishing rebuilding my Norton and replacing a clutch on my Moto Guzzi sidecar outfit which will probably keep me busy till Christmas.

Cheers
