Noise from the head at times.

Blue model 35,000km with little dirt work but i do get up it through the gears on the road at times. oil changed every 1,500-2,000 kms , although i dont know the first 10,000 km history of the bike. Will try and explain the noise. Bike starts from cold and runs great with a 5min warm up at idle(no noises). As i ride and go through the gears on the first couple of stops and starts a noise appears. I keep the revs low and change gears , say 3rd to 4th to 5th, it (doesnt ) sound like a cam chain rattle. Im thinking abit of a dry cam bearing. I stll rev it steady untill more heat into the engine and sound goes away. Its like  (only) the first 1km of the ride the noise is there.  after the noise goes i give it heaps into the ride and all is good. Any ideas please.  Should i look into some head work soon. Thanks.

Is it road speed related or engine speed related? A rattle, knock or squeak? Whipping off the top cover and checking the camshaft caps is not too strenuous - make sure the bike is clean (no mud dropping from loom/frame into the head cavity) and you have a suitable torque wrench to do them up again (careful to get them straight and seated before tightening them down) If dry, they'll be obviously scored as they're only soft. Just double check the valve clearances while you're there. I find they can tick a bit at the wider end of the acceptable range, but as long as they're within that range and your oil is good, a bit of a ticking is not a big problem.

Check your drive chain for tight spots when cold.

I suffer from rattle sensitivity. It's a curse! My brother's recommendation is to wear a full face helmet and earplugs and fix it when it won't run anymore! In fact that's pretty much his philosophy on life. You couldn't meet 2 less alike brothers, even discounting his navel length beard!

Good luck with the search,
Simon.

Mr Google told you TTR's have arrows?!

Is it a grinding noise or what?

Squeak/ tiny grind noise.  soun Is  Rev related.  Positive not clutch noise. Or drive chain noise.  Ive got the rattle sensitivity worry also. I will look into it more soon.  Thanks.

Sorry about my poor attempt at a joke Mark - I have had a bit of a strange day!

The head is normally flooded with oil so I suspect that the camshaft journals aren't the culprit but there is only one way to check but I would suggest you leave it until you need to adjust the valve clearances so you don't have to pull off the camshafts just for a look-see.

However, I can't think what else could give rise to the noise you describe......

Brian

No probs Brian.   Heads always flooded with oil Sounds good.  I test that 10mm bolt for oil pressure after each change. (What a mess it makes). Beach ridding for the next 500kms with a pillion will give it a good work out. TTR with a ship wreck photo or with dingoes will appear soon.

Dont rule out the case saver on the front sproket  or loose engine mounts maybe a loose exhaust shield

its rare to get top end noises unless it been abused which i doubt your steed has

Thanks all. Ive had the header pipe exhaust shield vibration which was a scare a while back. No noise after 2km of riding so sprocket saver maybe not. Bike cannot be unloaded from a trailer for another 36hours so will engine mounts then. Thanks.

Finally got to check the cam chain. Looks like its worn, 45,000 km mainly road use,..... its the same with the rattle, if i keep the revs down for the first 20min ridding theres no rattle. After that long warm up the rattle dissappears...

So i wont give it max revs till its repaired..

On taking my engine apart, I seem to be missing my arrows and they seem to one of the few parts not stocked by Steve. Does anyone know the Yamaha part number for them?

I agree with your brother, out on the DRZ the other day without earplugs, I thought the motor was going to blow for sure

Apparently not though, got home fine.
