Throttle sticking HELP
Permalink

So i just bought myself a 1999 ttr250 and everything works amazing, however the idle is high. I can fix this by giving it throttle real quick and letting off and then the idle goes down to normal. The cable doesnt seem to be sticking. Not entirely sure whats going on here. Theres a post on this forum that describes my problem to the tee, but the pictures that provide the solution and the placement of the screw i am looking for are no longer available. Can someone please help me before i decide to take the carburetor off and mess it up even more. Im pretty much a novice when it comes this so any help would be VERY MUCH APPRECIATED....here is the link to the post i am talking about http://ttr250.activeboard.com/t54832486/help-ttr-stays-on-high-revs/

Hi Levi

I have inserted two of what I hope are the correct photos but I can't think what Jarrah meant when he mentioned "to check the tension of the two slide retaining screws..." Anyone else know what he was referring to please?

our lads raid does it , even without the cables attached, rev it up from the carb and it feels really notchy whilst its running but really smooth when its not, holds it revs until the throttle is quickly blipped, I'm told by previous posts that its the actual throttle slide which may have worn slightly oval, so I need to replace it, very expensive aparrently but how expensive ?
do you stock them brian ?

doh.... sorry does the "TWO SLIDE RETAINING SCREWS" refer to the 2 tiny cross heads that are used to hold the needle down inside the slide ???

Sorry Neil but I can't afford to stock them! £127 inc VAT plus carriage.

Could be but I think Jarrah would have described them as needle retaining screws as he was quite precise. Still baffled confuse

Still worth checking them if you take the carb off Levi!

Yarp!

I think it has some sort of Teflon coating so not sure sanding it is a good idea.

so i took the airbox out and did everything in preparation for removing the carb, but just my luck one of the screws that secures the throttle to the carb is stripped (not my doing) and i cant get the throttle off.....ugh....so looks like the carb is going to stay on and im going to run as is for the time being......but if i end up getting that damn screw out where and how would i find a replacement screw

Bad luck cry

Not sure I understand which screw has stripped - is it one of those shown in the photo below?

 Removing_carb1.jpg

Or do you mean the bolts/screws at the throttle end of the cables?

A photo would be good wink

The screw i was talking about was one of the two screws that secure the throttle spring to the carburetor, one of these screws isnt visible in the picture unless you twist the throttle out of the way. I figured out that there is no need to remove the throttle that way and instead it was much easier (and probably the correct way) to just loosen the nuts and remove the end of the cables from thier slots in order to separate the carburetor from the throttle. Anyways....i did find the issue....carb was amazingly clean and both the pilot jet and the main jets where perfect and gunk free. Also on the other side of the carb the screw that i was asking about was tight as can be. The problem was that the pilot jet (the little one right?) was screwed all the way. I went ahead and corrected this by screwing it out 1 1/2 turns. Runs like a charm now. Having never taken a carburetor apart in my life i feel pretty accomplished. Thank you all for your help and i will continue to remain a member here as i am sure there a many more projects like this in the coming weeks.

Mine does the same, I took off the carb today and my slide is sticking  and the only way I can stop it from over revving is letting the throttle go quickly so the slide stays down and doesn't stick up should I get a new slide or carb or can I fix it?furiousconfuse

I'm tipping the only way to fix it is to buy a new slide. Cleaning seems to have been a slight temporary fix for people, I bought a new slide and it fixed mine.

Stoopid price but how else can you get one that is in good condition? I love riding and you spend so much on all sorts of stuff, it hurts when you pay for the slide but then a few days later, so what. You can enjoy riding again.

Strange things happen in Ireland???

The musketeers are looking forward to visiting d'Artagnan on the emerald Isle in may.

As for the sticking throttle,  Not sure any sort of vacuum in the carb would make it stick? Very strange,

According to Nelly, further back in this thread, that's a worn throttle slide. I assume when the engine's off there's no vacuum keeping it tight against the side of the body. When the engine's running the suction causes the slide to bite. I guess you should be able to see wear marks on the slide if this is happening?

Thanks Moss ill check the slide it seems like the most likely culprit .

Locktite super glue has being holding it for last 300 miles .
Front axel retaining bolts nuts all loosened out on long road trip .
I think somebody is tring to kill me .

Have you checked that the throttle cables are ajusted properly , if one is too tight , it will have trouble getting back to tickover , think its happened to me .... just a thought , try it with just one cable to check it ... if it goes back to tickover ok , you have found your problem.... whilst its still in the bike ....

Thanks for sugestion kev but cables are all free and  good the throttle becomes very  stiff only with motor running so it must be as moss sugested internal slide or something .

Will double check cables anyway .Am kinda getting used to having cruise control on the motorway .

Hi. I had many carb problems when I bought the bike, the fault with mine was slight play on the Rivited joint of the arm which pulls the slide up and down inside the carb. Idle all over the place. High if I just rolled off and normal if I blipped it and let it snap shut.
Previous owner had taken the throttle stop screw completely out so I’m assuming at wot it was putting pressure on said joint.
Hope this helps

I know that some TTR "tuners" recommend removing the stop but I don't subscribe to that idea no

Agree I backed mine off enough so the slide fully opens  and locked it up again that way the force is taken on the screw not the slide assembly
