all the gear no idea..............

hi guys
sorry if this is a rather newbie type question, but we all have to start somewhere hey?

now ive got the bike, the boots, tool kit,spares,................................... now how do I go about finding these greenlanes, after all its what i bought the bike for in the first place,
Ive not rode the bike properly off road yet,im waiting for our lad to get his finger out and pass his test, he did however pass his theory test last week so its a start, then we,ll be looking to get out on the lanes, I don't fancy going it alone in case I have a serious off in the middle of nowhere, but its like fishing, metal detecting etc, nobody tells you wheres best to go,you have to put in the time and do the research, ive been and bought a landranger map 1;50,000, but it tells me naff all, and I have to wear my glasses AND use a magnifying glass to see the tiny red dots etc ,

I'm not asking for your precious routes that you want to keep up your sleeve , but more asking how you go about finding them, what do you do?
I/we intend to be law abiding and both have fully road legal bikes, were not part of the tossers on crossers brigade, and at nearly 50 I don't intend to be racing around but more taking in the scenery and enjoying myself,

any tips would be greatly appreciated
thankyou

Best is get onto the TRF forum ask for a local group and then ask for a Noob ride with them they will take you out show you some lanes all nice an safe. then should you want to get right into it you can sigh Up with them and they will have a map mark up system or overlay for a sat nav that will sort you onto the legal lane's you can ride in your county. down hear in Devon we have a gps over lay system with overlays for that an google Earth and if you like paper maps you can mark them off that. I don't know what neck of the woods you are in you can find some lane list's online at sites like this but they are seldom up to date. is your county on this one [ ok I see where you are and it's not think this is you local group http://emtrf.co.uk/

Yeah get in touch with east midlands trf they will hook you up. Worth doing because instead of trying to learn and then remember where the lanes are, they will take you on rideouts and you could just follow them. Priceless stuff. And yeah eventually show yu how to use a gps system.

It's not you - the TRF acknowledge they need to improve their membership web page. I would have thought that a high priority! If you don't hear best to chase it up - Gill Mitchell is the Membership Secretary - membership@trf.org.uk

Anytime. I'm a retired layabout so should be able to find the time. I'll stick to the easy ones.
