GPS Navigation - Memory Map and Viewranger?

Having got my head around Memory Map, I'm now finding the 3" screen on my MM device a bit small due to ageing eyesight

So I'm looking for a bigger screen solution, ideally using the memory maps I've already bought as that was quite an investment.

I can run the memory Map App on Andriod, so one option is a mobile phone. My concern here is finding one that has a decent GPS chip and antenna inside (vs. Assisted AGPS), tough enough for the job (rain, mud and vibration), and cheap enough not to make me cry if it breaks first time out.  There are some chinese mobiles on ebay for about £40, or a newish but used Moto G typically for about £120 - these have 4.5 or 5" screens so ought to be a big help.  Any tried and tested suggestions?

Another challenge for the mobile is making the screen stay on - I think there are are Andriod Apps that can force this, but I'm not sure how well these work?

I'm hearing good things about ViewRanger - I guess the only difference is that the App itself might be better than the MM one?  Does anyone know if I can use my MM Maps with this, or would I have to buy them over again?

So the above describes where I'm at confuse - if anyone has done all this already and has words of wisdom to share I'd be glad to hear them smile

Thanks, Andy.

Hi Andy

I have VR in my android phone, app is free. Load onto your pc and by the maps, they are cheap. Plot your route sync your phone, job donesmile

I have some neat tips in the settings as well.

Any android phone should have a display setting and select never turn off.

Hope that helps

Steve

Thanks Steve,

I ordered a cheap phone so lets see what happens.  Your description sounds simple enough

Update - cheap chinese phone arrived but GPS function useless (among other things) so that's gone back.

I now have a Moto G which seems great.

Next challenge is to mount it on the bars or somewhere.
