So my TTR's engine area has developed a loud squawking noise after an extended period of main road riding and the engine gets hot. When I pull the clutch in the noise disappears immediately, and immediately returns when let back out again. But if I pull over briefly and pull the clutch in thus letting things cool, it goes away.

I'm guessing I need to install new clutch plates and springs?

BTW I only ever use the recommended 10w40 semi synthetic oil of a good quality brand.

Sounds like another "screech" type of situation Pete cry

When the clutch is out, all the plates should be packed together tightly with no movement.

The only explanation for the screech that I can think of is that you have some slippage. Are you aware of the clutch slipping?

A simple check is to pull in the clutch when riding in top gear, rev the engine and dump the clutch. If the clutch is good the revs should immediately drop back. If there is a short delay then that's a good indication that you probably need to replace the friction plates.

Before doing anything else, just make sure that there is free play in the cable.

The clutch doesn't seem to be slipping, it seems to be biting nicely haven't noticed anything, I will try the top gear thing, I was thinking that it might be a clutch plate chatter, it stops when clutch is pulled in so its obviously something to do with the drive train, it is very much a squawk rather than a screech..

I have done your top gear trick Brian and no the clutch does not seem to slip at all, also there is and has been the correct amount of free play in the cable, so still pondering what the occasional squawk noise could be.

 

I might give some motorcycle specific engine flush a go.

Think i'd have the clutch out and inspect all the parts. Bet the clutch gets a hard time when riding off road.
