Speedo stopped working

Hi everyone, my speedo has just stopped working. The display illumnates, but just shows a big fat 0, and I know it's faster than that! I was just wondering if anyone could help me diagnos if it's the magnet, the sensor or something else before I buy the wrong thing from Brian!

Cheers  Mud

Speedo not working
Permalink

So my speedo on my 99 TTR250 has stopped working. I undid the bottom part of the cable and hooked up a cordless drill and it will show movement on the speedo and trip counter so assume the problem is not in cable or display.

Looking through the pages here I found the following info, and wondering if it is easy to check this washer to see if it is the problem.

f) For mechanical speedos, as fitted to UK blue models, Yamaha only sells the speedo drive mechanism in one piece (part number 4PX-25190) - price inc VAT is a whopping £116.85 plus VAT as at August 2010!!! But it is usually only the three-tab "drive" washer that fails and these are no longer available separately. However a stainless steel after-market tab washer is available from Totally TTRs

Thanks,

Take the front axle out and turn the RH fork leg and you will get access to the inside of the speedo drive.

Clean off the grease, take off the circlip and lift out the 3-tab washer.

You will see from the inside of the washer if it has been slipping on the drive.

Because the gear is expensive - see here  - it is always worth trying the s/s tab washer first.

How do I go about paying for one (and the postage) and having it sent to me in Australia.

Thanks, Michael

Send an email to sales@totallyttrs.com with a note of what you want and where you are and Trish will sort you out wink

The s/s washer doesn't always cure the problem but to give it the best chance make sure you clean out the internals of the drive gear very well and particularly make sure there is no dirt or grit that might jam the worm gears.

Cheers

Good point and a good reminder to add a note to our advert!

If the washers are worn then it might leave the new tabbed washer wobbling about a bit!

Speedo dashlight

Hey I  have a 2001 TTR 250 and was wondering if I missed it or if they just don't have a speedo dashlight.

And was wondering if anyone has done a lighting mod for it?

Thanks.

Hi. My 2006 ttr has a dash light. Maybe try your bulb. I did the light switch job from the imfo on this site. All my lights go off with one switch. Although ive left my dash light running. Still deciding if i will do the tail pipe air box rejet job. I only weigh about 70 kgs so the bike gets up and goes already.

Digital Speedo gone blank
Permalink

Hello again,

Im new here, searched and read all posts regarding speedo problem but it seems my problem is not mentioned.

For the past two weeks I v been using my newly acquired TTR. Upon turning on the key the speedo does the usual start up 188KMph and then sets to 0. Worked fine...till.....today no

I turned on the speedo and nothing not even 0 , the back light is on but the digital speedo is blank. Any suggestions please ?

P.s. I did not mess with anything, just took the exhaust apart for a clean up!

Hi Henry and welcome to the forum!

It was cleaning up the exhaust that caused the problem biggrin

Seriously, all I can suggest at this stage is that you take the headlight off and carefully examine the wires going into the speedo's block connector and the terminals themselves for any corrosion or damaged wires. If it all looks good then give both sides of the connector a good spray with electrical clean up fluid and connect it up again keeping your fingers crossed it was a poor connection!

If that fails then I am not sure what to suggest next as I don't know what the individual wires do.

I have a memory of seeing a diagram explaining the wiring but can't immediately find it. Maybe someone else can help?

Brian

PS This is the best I can find at the moment:

Hello Brian , Thank you for your extensive reply.

I just came up from the garage and I am reading your reply ( I appreciate your help a lot ). I fixed it, as you suggested it was a simple cleanup of the Blue Terminal block.
I am a happy man now biggrin

Just a small contribution from my end. a few days ago I added a small tachometer. I used aluminium piece and attached it to the bar clamp bolt. I lined it up so I can watch both the speedo and the rev counter whilst driving.

An addition would be a small green  led with a shunt to light it up when I turn on the key.

Phote attached  , shall I post it elsewhere Brian ? Nice eve and a happy weekend to all

Regarding the tacho, it would be good to start a new thread on the modifications forum here . I am sure members will be interested to see what you have done.

Recalibrating the Speedo
Permalink

Is there a way to adjust the calibration of the analogue speedo on a blue tanked TTR. Mine is definitely reading out quite considerably. Is a kmh speedo, but it's almost reading my, but not quite. Yesterday the speedo was reading about 85kmh but my goods track says I was going at 105kmh, that's almost a 25% under reading.

Any thoughts on whether this can be adjusted?

A new one to me Simon!

No adjustment that I am aware of cry

Could the three-tab washer in the drive gear be slipping?

It could be that the needle isn't FIRM on the spindle?

It could be that your tyre is OVER inflated?

It could be the cable is partially broken?

It could be your "goods track" isn't reading correctly? - What's a "goods track" confuse?

IMO you'd better visit Brian and try a replacement to be sure.

It's not urgent, I'll do some tests/checks after next weekend once the Cambrian rally is out of the way.

Hi Bryan

I test digital speedo heads by plugging them into my "shopping" TTR where I know the existing speedo is working. If it doesn't work then the speedo head is duff coz I know everything else is OK.

Is it the speedo head on your own TTR? If so, then the first suspects are the magnet and sender unit on the front sprocket.

Check the magnet is in one piece and, if so, check you have the pulsing output on the speedo sender. If both OK then it starts to point to a problem in the speedo head itself cry

Brian

Hi Brian
Jam wanting to sell the speedo unit as I have stripped the bike down to the basics for enduro purposes . I have removed all the connections and exess wiring that goes with all the switches and speedo but stupidly didn't cheack it worked before I started . I know these are hard to come by these days so didn't want to throw it out if someone can use the parts. The magnet is fine but someone has been at the wires and cut the pick up wires and been messing with the generator wires . Plus there's only one other ttr in Paphos and it's the blue tank model so I can't even test it on that!
Thanks for the info

Bryan

When I do the speed sensor test I get a constant voltage of 4.79v. In my simple mind I think a broken electrical component should have 0v, I'm assuming it's broken, have you got a spare exchange unit in stock Brian?

Hi Ken

I am not too clever on electrics but the manual says the voltage should go between 5V and 0V as you slowly rotate the rear wheel.

If yours doesn't do this then, yes, there is something wrong.

We have just one working sender unit in stock at the moment if you need it - see http://www.totallyttrs.com/#Speedometer_pickup

speedo accuracy

what is the general consensus about how accurate TTR speedo's are?. I don't have a GPS to check mine but with the largest gearbox sprocket fitted to my 2011 with no other changes to factory rear sprocket or tyre I get the impression on the motorway which has a 110 kph limit that i'm travelling on the legal limit with my speedo reading almost 120 kph. you get the sense that most cars are doing that speed in the inner lanes but you certainly get passed by a lot in the so called passing only lane which you are not supposed to travel in except when overtaking.

I think other Yamaha models use the same speedo DT125 etc.
You might find one with similar miles on ebay.

Someone started a thread with some pics showing how to get into the mechanical speedo head but darned if my searches can find it no

Searched on speedo, head, apart etc but no result!

My  recollection is that the top of the speedo is glued on. To get it off you need to cut around it in some way. Perhaps using a small hacksaw blade or a Dremel. There is bound to be a small amount of damage when you come to lever it off but if the alternative is to replace it then you have nothing to lose!

If you do have a go then please take some pics and let us know how you get on wink

Someone's had a go at mine before. It does look like there is a tiny slot to shove a terminal screwdriver in the base and flick it open and that's what they've tried and given up. Bit daft being 'totally' sealed. Speedo's perfect through them flashy things ont roads now, just can't see how far I go. It's bugging me.
If the weathers crap again tomorrow I'll have a go at it.
