New rear sprocket bolts
Permalink

Hi Guys,

Need new rear sprocket bolts. Bought a second set of rims and replaced the rear sprocket. The bolt heads and nuts were fairly stuffed but I got them off and back on again. Happy with how they did up and used locktite. However I am now thinking I probably should have used new ones and stop being so tight - if they fail it could be very untidy.

I'm in Aus so not worth postage from the UK etc but I will take one off and take it to the local bolt shop. Anything special I need to know about them, do they need to be high tensile or not etc?

Thanks in advance Guys

Leigh

Hi Leigh,
May I suggest going to a local bike or bike parts shop, you can by sprocket bolt sets for about $30. The bolts do need to be high tensile and have the correct taper on the head if the sprocket has tapered holes and have decent niloc type nuts. Its not worth the risk of having them work loose or break.
I purchased my last set from Ballards Offroad in NSW (Penrith I think), still using them. They are excellent to deal with and generally ship overnight.

Regards,

Dion, Tas.

Hey thanks fellas. Couldn't source any from a local bolt supplier(close but not perfect) or any bike shops locally. Brian's are the cheapest but long way to Aus just for 6 bolts. Will buy some next time I get something from ttr towers or Ballards. New nuts on the back of the old ones will be fine for now. Not that it really makes much difference I'm thinking but new nylock nuts or flange nuts with locktite like the originals? Thoughts? I've got both in the shed.

Dion I am in Tas too, whereabouts are you located? I use Ballards all the time, great service. $30 is not a lot of money but for bolts worth $5 then $15 postage I thought I'd try plan b.

Cheers

Postage from the UK is more than the cost of the bolts! The total for a set of bolts sent by Airmail to Australia would be £12.25 no
