Petrol tap or fuelling?

Hi guys, I would be grateful for some assistance in troubleshooting some issues with my bike. I bought it a couple of weeks ago from a chap on here, and it started fine then. However, it now seems hard to get started. It also dies after a while with the fuel tap o. The "on" position, but seems to work fine on the "reserve" position at least for my 12 mile commute.

Thanks in advance!

I would take the fuel tap apart and check it. As for the starting it could be a number of things, what are the symptoms?

Bearing in mind I've never owned a carbed vehicle before, I give it a couple of throttle turns, then push the starter, it turns, starts, then stops. Happens quite a few times. I've had to turn the idle screw right up to keep it going.

Pull the fuel pipe off the tap and see how fuel flows when on reserve and on.

Yep out, you may need to unscrew the Choke plunger and check that too.

Thanks for the responses guys. So I decided to ride it to work today, and the inevitable happened... I broke down on a country roady. Got rescued eventually by the good old RAC, and the nice man checked the spark plug, carb float, and fuel tap, which all seem fine. He then took the fuel tank off and tried the fuel taps in the open and reserve option, and there was no fuel coming out at all... until he tilted the tank to the left. Turns out there was fuel on the right "compartment" of the fuel tank, and not so much on the left. Seems strange that Yamaha would design a tank that does not connect both hemispheres... unless I am missing something? That seemed to sort the problem out, and I duly filled the tank asap. It still took a while to start back up at the end of the day when I had to make the journey home though...

Maybe there is a rag stuck in the tank, or the factory mold went wrong. Looking at this photo i can see what you mean by two seperate tank areas. You can try to empty tank then add say ,a quart of fuel and see if tap works. Then add another quart and see if it works. Ive read the fuel caps can be faulty , have the cap off and try again.  Id hate to leave my TTR broken down on the road. Two big blokes and a ute or van and the bikes gone.
