00 Raid replacement engine or repair?

I've been offered a 00 Raid at small money. The guy who is selling it said he got it as payment for some work. The previous owner fell off on the road, bent the gear lever, rode in home in 1st gear and killed the engine. The present owner  had the crank redone and rebuilt it but said it "**** itself" again. The engine is apart and the bike looks complete and has a log book. I'm a mechanical numpty so couldnt take on rebuilding the engine so I wonder what would it cost to have the engine rebuilt or replaced. Any ideas folks? I live in the north West of Ireland.

Tom

A new crank and a rebuild I would of thought is likely to be top dosh, probably hundreds. Even more if there is other mangled engine components. Just reassembling it and reinstalling it in the bike alone a mechanics workshop would likely charge you £120+ (€166+)...cry

I didn't realise that you could get an '00' raid... £250 sounds OK to me, even without a working engine, there is a ttr engine on ebay at the moment for £275, Described as 'used but servicable' Its in exeter, probs a bit far for you, but shows that they do come up for reasonable amount. You would probably make a bit even if you were to break it and sell the parts....

Thanks for the input folks. The seller knows he could make money by breaking it but would prefer to see someone put it back on the road. . I'm away for the next few days but when I return i will call him to arrange to pick it up. It is small money and I can take my time searching for an engine.

A conrod and big end kit is expensive - see here

Finding a skilled motorcycle engineer to do the pressing and balancing would be between £60 and £100 I would guess. Haven't had one done for a while. Once done, it should outlast both you and the TTR! Is the crank definitely in need of doing? If not then the cost of the engine rebuild depends on whether a rebore is needed along with any other parts.

Happy to help with costs but need more info as to what needs replacing or work!

Brian
