Removal of front sprocket advice.

Guys, 

Its the first time I am changing the chain and sprockets on the 4GY.  I'm changing the gearing having read the posts on this forum.

However, the front sprocket; is it a left or right hand thread? 

Ive knocked up the flange (insert own joke!) and the 30mm nut has to come off.  The bike is in first gear and on the floor.  If I turn anti clockwise it turns the engine.  If I turn right, it reverses the engine.

ive already taken the chain off.  Do I need to pop it back on and jam the rear wheel with a piece of wood in the swinging arm?

Not if you've got a impact driver no, it will whip straight off

Hi. Yes its a right hand thread .... Righty tighty .... Lefty loosey..as they say. Yes you will have to put at least the top run of the chain on, and maybe get the wife to hold the rear brake on .. If you are lucky enough Not to have a wife, an impact gun usually does the trick single handed.

Good stuff, cheers chaps. I'm trying to source a 30mm deep reach socket off a mate as I have an air line and impacts gun.  At the moment I'm trying with a ring spanner and a quick action wrist!

Success!! 

Having ditched he'd the ring spanner and my well exercised wrist I nipped to halfords and picked up an impact socket. 

Bloody hell it was a bugger to shift though. I put the chain back on, strapped the bike down (wife is not allowed in garage / man cave) and set the impact gun loose. 

It wasn't for moving. Nothing. It was even marking the edges of the nut. I honestly thought I was doing something wrong to the ppint that I recorded it to host it here and ask that very question. 

However, a courageous increase of the PSI on my compressor saw it fin ally relinquish its hold and off it came. 

I genuinely believe it's the original, factory fitted Yam sprocket from 1995. The bike only has 3500Kms on the clock, I don't know where she has been for so long tucked up and not used but with the way it was fitted and the look of the sprocket being stamped with Yamaha 4GY I would not be surprised. 

 

Anyway, I'm going for 13/49 set up. 13/52 appears favourite on this forum but I don't have time to mess with the rear chain guard as I'm off to the Isle Of Man in a fortnight.

Good news . Just a tip for others . If youre using an air impact gun you may need someone to push the bike backwards enough to put tension on the chain to conter the direction of the gun.
