Yet another starter fault
Permalink

Hi

Has any one come across this , starter keeps cranking on its own, traced fault to solenoid ( continuity across both post) new item fitted , wiring from start button checked all ok. Started several times as normal ,then continuous cranking only way to stop it was to remove earth wire from battery. New solenoid checks out working correctly, wires from starter button disconnected just to make sure , touch earth back on battery starter cranks over.

Any ideas ?

What a coincidence Mark! I have a customer whose solenoid packed up. Fitted a new one which did the same as yours. Assumed solenoid faulty so replaced it. Heard the other day that his TTR started doing the same again confuse

Looking forward to hearing some suggestions for a fix!

Brian

maybe the fried Solenoid is not the cause but the consequence of a faulty Start button ?
on my chineze honda clone I randomly ran into this kind of trouble: the contacts inside the button were cooked and connected while riding. The funny part of my story is that to start that bike one has to press simultaneously on Front brake & start button. Stopping on traffic red light was funny.

or the wires going from that start button with faulty / cracked insulation ? - may produce the same effect if 2 wires shorted under handle bars.

Re- check the solenoid again to be sure it is not already damaged (disconnect wires, check continuity, link to button only then trigger it many times, try to load it with a small load drawing 4-6 Amp, like a 55W bulb).

EDIT: asking around I found out that a partially shorted starter motor can fry/ damage a solenoid. This is applicable to Chineze street bikes sold in my area. Dealing with these make us encounter ANY trouble once every 6 months to 2 years, kind of troubles that you may never deal with in entire life of a branded bike confuse

Thanks for the reply i have stripped the starter button down and checked the wiring down to the first plug and all ok, checked solenoid again and all seems to be ok . Still none the wiser.

Hi Brian

Checking all wiring at the moment , whilst doing this i noticed the carb manifold stub had parted company ,( new item ordered from you arrived this morning many thanks ). Starter button cleaned and checked ,solenoid checked all ok . Starter powered up with a power probe and cranks normally, do you think new solenoid may have been a bit sticky?

Hi Mark

Good to meet you earlier! I really don't understand what's happening with your Raid but am hoping that somehow the replacement solenoid will magically fix it wink

I took the duff solenoid apart earlier this evening to show it it works - see here - I hope it makes sense! My guess is that somehow the copper contacts weren't releasing on your solenoid for some reason. Weak or broken spring perhaps?

Brian

for future reference to isolate the cause just disconnect the switch wire from the solenoid (small wire ) if it still cranks its the solenoid , if not then its a matter of checking the wiring switch ext

Hi Brian

Thanks for all your help , fitted the part you gave me and all seems well, The strange readings i was getting must have just been a trace voltage as there was no amps ( either that or i need a new multi meter).

many thanks again and let me know what i owe you.

Regards

Mark
