Thought about it a few times as to the direction of oil flow in the TTR. After the oil pump what route does the oil get pumped around the engine ? I believe there's a strainer that the oil would flow to before it reaches the filter ?

Through what channel(s) does the oil flow to return to the oil pan after it has reached the top end/camshafts? I have been unable to ascertain this information from research or from inspecting the engine, even after removing the valve cover. I think I may have a blocked oil return line/channel and I have hit a roadblock in my trouble shooting. Thanks in advance for your help.

Welcome to the forum!

I think the camshaft oil overflows into the sump via the timing chain slot. When removing the cam cover you will find the oil pooled around the exhaust cam.

Thanks for such a fast reply. That was my thought too, seems like cleaning this channel would require removing the whole top end yeah? Also seems large enough that the return channel would very unlikely get clogged. I am trying to solve why I have so much oil in the airbox. Seems unlikely to be bad rings as other threads have suggested as the rings are new only a few hundred miles ago when the Thumper big bore (325) kit was installed. Same one you have Brian.

P.S. Sorry to hijack this thread.

Bill

Hi Bill

The oil flow is not connected to the oil in your airbox.

Excess oil mist going through the breather and emulsifier into the airbox is unfortunately caused by pressurisation from blowby coming from the piston/bore. The cause is usually incorrectly fitted, damaged or worn rings.

I would like to suggest it was something else but other than totally overfilling the engine with oil I can't think of any other cause.

If the engine isn't noisy, smoking or using oil then I would just live with it and enjoy your 325 wink

Brian

I was steadily approaching this unwanted conclusion myself, but I was endeavoring to play out my own theories before submitting to the reality. It is helpful to hear the words from someone with much for experience than myself. And, it is nice to have my standard operating procedure of late, checking and adding oil regularly, validated as a solution that is likely not harmful to the bike. I think that I will likely continue to ride as-is for a while until the money for a permanent solution has accumulated.

Thank you for your extremely fast replies and your expertise. Much appreciated.

Bill
