I know there's been a few threads on chain/sprocket combinations, but I though I'd start a thread from my experiences that gives a few sprocket, links, tyre and adjuster combinations and what sort of clearances they give at correct chain tension.  Maybe this can build up over time into a reference that people can use.

So i'll make a start

Interesting and very timely Simon - ta biggrin

Just looking at what length I need to cut a new chain to fit new 14/48 sprockets plus a new (still got the hairy fuzz on it!) MT43.

112 is way too slack but 110 puts the tyre very close to the swing arm. No way would a mud flap survive in there at the moment hmm

I am going for 110 as the tyre clears the swing arm and assume I will get a bit of slack as the new chain and sprockets bed in and the tyre squares up a bit.

Looking back through all the excellent informative posts on sprocket gearing I thought I’d figured out the TTR basics of gearing, tyre sizing and swingarm clearances and then Brian’s post has got me puzzled again. I figured that running a new MT43 with a 14/48 combo would require 108 links giving a tight clearance or 110 which would be slack/okay to begin with but maybe require a couple of links extracted as the parts wear.

I’m running 14/48 with 108 links (good condition) and a fairly worn MT43 with just about adequate clearance. I thought I might replace the MT43 for a new Mitas CO2 for winter but now I’m not sure whether the tyre will clear the swingarm. Don’t really want to replace the drivetrain just for the sake of a new tyre – seems wasteful !

Any help appreciated.

I guess there is a possibility I miscounted the links but I no longer have the TTR here to check. Maybe the new owner will oblige wink

My recollection is that the CO2 has a lower profile than the MT43 so you should be OK....

I was hoping that the CO2 might have a slightly lower profile so that's really useful, thanks. One very fortunate new owner out there - if only I'd waited before buying mine! that's two superb refurbs I've seen floating by now!

14/48 with 108 links gives adequate clearance with a C02, that's what I'm running right now. I believe Brian miscounted when he said in his build thread that he was going to run 110 links with the same combo.
