My Daughters new 1996 TTR 250.

Hello all,

My Daughter Charlotte is now riding a 1996 TTR 250 Open Enduro Bike. She loves it, has named it and is progressing toward a kids enduro race later in the year. (She is 13 and 5ft 7)

She progressed up from a KX125 which scared the life out of her alas, but was good experience.

I need your help with some challenges.

1. Weight- It is just that bit too heavy. How can I lighten the load? I want to change the fuel tank to plastic, change the exhaust and remove running gear. Ideas on parts and any other ways around it?

2. Starting- It only starts in gear, which can be tricky to find when flustered after stalling or dropping it.  Can this be changed?

3. Plastics and decals- Big disadvantage of an older bike, where can I get these from?

4. Clutch and throttle cable- EBay has come up with nothing. Where else is easy to try and look?

5. Lowering kit? Ideas to give another inch.

I am so glad I found this site....I really hope you can help me out.

Thanks in advance

Mark

Welcome to the forum Mark. Charlotte fits that TTR pretty well for a 13 year old!

Here are some ideas to lighten the bike:

  1. Remove indicators, their brackets and flasher unit.
  2. Remove the speedo, its sender unit and magnet, and either cut down the plastic cover or fit something like this.
  3. Remove the headlight and replace with a light plastic number plate.
  4. Remove the sidestand and switch (short out the connector to make the CDi think the stand is up)
  5. A lighter exhaust will reduce weight high up on the bike which is good!
  6. I will check the weight of the plastic tank (hard to get hold of!) against the metal tank as I think the are very similar in weight.

All of the original parts that you might remove have a good re-sale value.

To reduce the weight further would mean radical work. Seat, airbox, reduce wiring loom to bare minimum required are all possibilities.

I don't understand that it will only start in gear - do you mean it will only start in neutral? That's the usual problem with cut outs.

Cables here and lowering link here but it is possible to lower the TTR by an inch or so by letting the rear shock spring off and adjusting the yoke at the bottom of the shock.

I think Martyn has covered the rest wink

Brian

You could lower the seat as i did. It does make it a bit hard though.

Looks like you've given up and are selling it already Mate:

Shame, they're great bikes.

Should try and sell it on here.

Wheel Man,

Well- spotted mate!

It is on there for a quick sale, but not getting very far to be honest.

She loves the bike but is just too heavy for her in the current form.

Is a shame that no-one is doing aftermarket parts & plastics for it.

Thanks for the replies fellas! Much appreciated.

Will reply to Brians' excellent email separately.

Mark

Brian,

Thanks so much for your reply- you are a legend!

  1. Remove indicators, their brackets and flasher unit. - Done this - Thanks.
  2. Remove the speedo, its sender unit and magnet, and either cut down the plastic cover or fit something like this. - Will have a look, but did not want to remove the speedo unit as Charlotte likes the neutral light...it helps her after she has dropped it and is in a flap!
  3. Remove the headlight and replace with a light plastic number plate. - This was done accidentally when she crashed and slid down a bank at Washbrook Farm on Saturday! The cowel mounting peg cracked. Recommendations for a replacement blank number plate? Polisport perhaps?
  4. Remove the sidestand and switch (short out the connector to make the CDi think the stand is up) - This means it will start in any gear then? I can replace it with a lightweight enduro stand then I presume as the existing one is heavy as arse, and too short for the bike
  5. A lighter exhaust will reduce weight high up on the bike which is good!- Have been searching for ages but cannot find one listed anywhere. Sure that one for a later TTR would fit. Please help! Recommendations? One to sell then just let me know.
  6. I will check the weight of the plastic tank (hard to get hold of!) against the metal tank as I think the are very similar in weight. - You are totally right Brian, I just took the tank off this morning and it is not all that heavy really, but a plastic one bounces better and doesn't get dented!

Brian- yes, it only starts in neutral. Which is real pain when doing an enduro. Will point 4 in your list overcome this?

The last thing I need to sort is a new seat or seat cover as this one is ripped.

Thanks Brian- Are you local to Herts? I could do with paying you a consultancy fee for your help!

Mark

Thanks for the explanation on the eBay ad Mark!

Speedo removal. You will need to remove it to fit a number board. The neutral switch is a simple earth so it should be a relatively simple job to fit a separate warning light on the bars. I had some switch mounts made up from aluminium to hold Symtec heated grips switches - see pic below - and something similar that fixes under a handlebar mount bolt would hold a warning light.

This is how they fit:

Rocker switch 001.jpg

Number plate board - something like this might work?

Starting in gear. To start in gear, the stand must be up and the clutch pulled in. If either of these switches are faulty, the TTR will only start in neutral. Personally, I wouldn't remove the clutch switch as its a great safety feature - especially for a flustered rider! Check yours is there and working. Shorting out the sidestand switch may also solve the problem if the switch was faulty.

If the TTR is lowered then your shorter stand will work fine but will she need a stand on a pure off road bike?

There are racing exhausts advertised on here regularly as many owners find them too loud for everyday use but they would be OK on a circuit. FMF is the most common. Perhaps put up an ad in the Wanted section?

Sorry but I haven't weighed the tanks yet - will try and do so soon. Your problem will be sourcing a TTR tank........

Seat covers here - cheaper ones (but not so well made IMHO) available on eBay.

I am based in Exeter so a bit far away for a personal consultation but happy to help as best I can ion the forum so that questions and answers can be shared with all forum members wink

Morning Brian

Thanks for all your help on the site, you are a fountain of knowledge thank goodness!

The bike starts in neutral regardless of whether the stand is down or not. It will not start unless in gear though. So I am confused as to what I need to disable to get it to start in gear.

Am sending you an email to order a load of parts shortly, over 10 items!

Thanks

Mark

Have you tried disconnecting the sidestand switch and shorting out the block on the loom? Could be a faulty switch.

Also, is the clutch switch present and does it look like the pin is popping out when the lever is pulled in?

It's gotta be one of those two switches causing the problem.

Brian
